Red Storm carry 2-0 record into non-conference tilt
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team welcomes Temple for a Wednesday night showdown at 7 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
The match-up will be streamed on FloSports, as Joe Vasile will have the call from Queens.
The Red Storm are off to a strong start after tallying a pair of wins during the opening week of play. After doubling up on Monmouth in the opener, 78-39, the Johnnies used a surging 16-0 run over the final eight minutes to move past St. Francis Brooklyn, 73-51, on Nov. 11.
The Johnnies were suffocating defensively in their first two games, allowing opponents to just 45.0 points a game, a mark that ranks 18th in NCAA Division I, as of Nov. 15. The perimeter defense has been stellar, as visitors are shooting a lowly 17.8 percent from beyond-the-arc.
Offensively, Kadaja Bailey has gotten off to a hot start, averaging 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds during the first two contests. In the season opening victory over Monmouth, on Nov. 7, the redshirt senior poured in a game-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Defensively, Bailey shined tying for the game-high of nine rebounds and blocking three shots against the Hawks. The Long Beach, N.Y., native was tabbed to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday, following a stellar opening week.
Pittsburgh transfer Jayla Everett has quickly established herself as a polished scoring option for the Red Storm. The redshirt senior leads the team with seven made three-pointers. In Friday's win, the Kirkwood, Mo., native put up a game high 18 points at Carnesecca Arena. She ranks second on the team with 14.5 points per outing.
Temple readies for its second of three straight contests against BIG EAST schools The Owls arrive at Carnesecca Arena with a 1-1 record, fresh off a victory over Georgetown, 78-61, on Nov. 12. Tiarra East leads the squad after averaging 12.5 points and nine boards through the first two games. The guard was named to the AAC and Big 5 Honor Rolls for her efforts.
The two programs have met each other 12 times, with St. John's leading the all-time series, 7-5. Last season, the Johnnies prevailed, 76-67, on the heels of a then-career-high 24 points from Bailey on Nov. 17, 2021. The Red Storm finished the game on a 10-1 run to lock in a victory at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia. Wednesday marks the first time the squads have met in Queens since Dec. 21, 1989.
Wednesday night is Military Appreciation Night at Carnesecca Arena, as we welcome military and ROTC members to join us. All current and former military members can purchase a $5 dollar ticket at the box office window with a vald military ID. The first 500 fans will receive a St. John's branded camo neck gaitor.
