Indoor and outdoor slate features seven meets in the New York Metropolitan area
QUEENS, N.Y.- With the season just around the corner, Director of Track and Field Aliann Pompey has released the schedule for the 2022-23 indoor and outdoor seasons. Â
Â
The slate includes seven events within the Five Boroughs, including two on-campus events in April and May, respectively.Â
Â
The Red Storm will kick off the indoor season with a short trip to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island to take part in the Youree Spence Garcia Invitational on Dec. 3. In 2021, the Johnnies posted 13 top-three finishes across 15 events.Â
Â
After an extended break, St. John's will return to Ocean Breeze to compete in the MLK Tribute Meet on Jan. 16. Last season, Tatyana McKenzie and Avon Samuels each grabbed a podium spot in the 300-meter dash as part of 13 top-three results logged by Red Storm athletes.Â
Â
Five days later, the Johnnies will participate in their third straight event at Ocean Breeze with the Villanova Invitational on Jan. 21.Â
Â
The Red Storm will then travel to Boston to race in the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 28. Last season, St. John's alumnus Leah Anderson broke the program's indoor 400-meter record with an impressive time of 53.11.Â
Â
After a trip to Beantown, the Johnnies will return to the friendly confines to battle against some of the best athletes in the Northeast in the Metropolitan Championships on Feb. 2-3.Â
Â
On Feb. 10, St. John's will go back to Boston to take part in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. This will mark the first time the Red and White has competed in the event since 2020.Â
Â
The Red Storm will wrap up the indoor season with a trip to Chicago for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 24 and 25. Last season, Anderson was named the conference's most outstanding and high-point performer in a dominant display on the track. As a team, the Johnnies finished fourth with 75 points.Â
Â
Should any student-athletes qualify, the ECAC Championships will be held in Boston on March 5 while the NCAA Indoor Championships will take place on March 10 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Â
St. John's will kick off the outdoor season with a trip to Florida for two meets. First, Coach Pompey's squad will compete in the USF Invite in Tampa on March 17 and 18. Then, the Red Storm will travel to South Beach to participate in the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on March 25.Â
Â
After an extended stay in the Sunshine State, the Johnnie will return home to host the Big Hurt Invitational at DaSilva Memorial Field on April 1.Â
Â
The next week, St. John's will split up with some athletes going to Philadelphia for the Temple Invite and others staying in New York for the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships. Both meets are slated for April 7 with the Mets Championships spanning two days.Â
Â
The Johnnies split up again the following week with some traveling to Princeton, N.J., for the Larry Ellis Invitational, and others making the trek north to Storrs, Conn., for the UConn Invitational on April 14 and 15, respectively.Â
Â
More split-team action follows on the third week of April. A portion of the squad will battle in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., on April 21, and another part will compete in the Mark Young Invitational in New Haven, Conn., on April 22.Â
Â
The Red Storm will close out the month of April with a few of them traveling to Philadelphia for the prestigious Penn Relays while most of the team will make the trip to West Point, N.Y., for the Army Twilight Meet. Both meets are scheduled for April 27.Â
