Red Storm ranked for the first time since Dec. 14, 2015
QUEENS, N.Y. - After garnering a national ranking in Monday's Associated Press poll for the first time since 2015, No. 25 St. John's will close its non-conference slate with Wagner on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The midweek matinee will be streamed on FloSports with Matt Levine and Joe Vasile on the call from Carnesecca Arena, where the Red Storm will conclude its five-game stretch at home.
The Red Storm enter the AP Top 25 for the first time since Dec. 14, 2015, following a win over Providence on Sunday. The Red Storm orchestrated a 17-5 run to begin the final quarter that sealed another conference victory, 63-,55, and kept an undefeated season intact.
As of Dec. 20, St. John's is one of the last 10 unbeaten teams still standing in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball. The 11-0 record to begin a campaign matches the best start in the program's 48-year history, set during the 2004-05 season.
Jayla Everett once again championed the scoring effort with season-highs of 21 points on five made three-pointers. The redshirt senior landed herself on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Over the last four contests, Everett has averaged 18.5 points per game and shot 52 percent from long range during that span. The guard leads the team with a scoring mark of 16.1 points per outing and ranks third in the BIG EAST with 28 triples made.
St. John's stifling defense has been lights out this season, allowing opponents to score 54.0 points per game, which ranks 22nd nationally and first in the conference. In eight of its 11 victories, opponents have shot less than 40 percent from the field.
Wagner will make the cross-borough trip to meet the Johnnies with an even 5-5 record on the season. The Seahawks are led by Alex Cowan who is averaging 12.2 points per game. The guard has sunk 41-of-45 (91.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
Wednesday will represent the 18th meeting between the two schools separated by just 17 miles. The Johnnies have taken 14 of the last 15 meetings with the Seahawks breaking the streak on their home floor last year.
Following Wednesday's contest, the squad will get a 10-day layoff over the holidays before it resumes BIG EAST play at Georgetown on New Year's Eve at noon.
