Red Storm reach 12-0 for the first-time in the program’s 48-year history
QUEENS, N.Y.- The No. 25 St. John's women's basketball team rewrote the record books on Wednesday afternoon when it notched its best start in program history after defeating Wagner, 80-51. The squad surpassed the 2004-05 squad that held the previous record of 11-0.
"Is it special? Absolutely. Is it something to be proud of? Absolutely," said Head Coach Joe Tartamella following the win. "These players have breathed life into everything we do."
The Johnnies exploded for a season-high 80 points during the record-setting day at Carnesecca Arena, shooting 50.9 percent for the game. The offense particularly prospered in the first and final quarter, where it poured in 45 points and shot a stellar 69.2 from the floor in those frames, respectively.
Jayla Everett was an undeniable scoring threat once again. For the second straight game, she exceeded a season high, finishing with 24 points. The guard's scoring total was the most by a Red Storm player this season. The redshirt senior went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Over her last five games, the prolific scoring guard has averaged 19.6 points per outing.
Kadaja Bailey added 14 points on an efficient shooting day, going 6-for-8 from field-goal range. The redshirt senior also led the team with a season-high seven assists.
Jillian Archer and Rayven Peeples anchored the rebounding effort as each finished with nine boards. The Johnnies controlled the glass, outrebounding Wagner, 39-21.
Everett got things started from the jump as she sunk a pull-up jumper directly off of the tip just four seconds in the game. Later in the quarter, Archer swung a pass to Everett on the opposite side of the floor for the first made triple from the St. Louis, Mo., native. On St. John's last offensive possession of the first, Everett dished to Danielle Patterson, who quickly fired it into the waiting hands of Bailey who buried a jump shot beyond to the arc to make it 23-12 at the end of the first.
Wagner stuck around in the second quarter, compiling a 6-0 run in the early stages to keep the contest in the balance. The Red Storm went into the break ahead, 37-27, after Everett buried a pair of free-throws, pushing her into double figures for the 11th time this year in as many games played.
In the second half, St. John's continued to control the tempo and build on its advantage. Patterson drove it in the lane and kissed it off the glass to push the advantage to 14, 49-35, forcing a Seahawks timeout with 5:43 remaining in the third quarter.
In the final stanza, Everett buried her final triple of the afternoon to make it 61-45. Sitota Gines had a season-high five points and career-high four rebounds in the final 3:16 of the matchup. During the culminating frame, the Johnnies offense closed the door, outscoring the visitors 22-7 in the fourth quarter to reach an unprecedented start to the year, 12-0.
The Red Storm will have a 10-day break over the holiday before resuming conference play at Georgetown on New Year's Eve at noon.
