Johnnies ranked in both national polls as conference play is set to resume
QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a break for the holidays, the No. 25/24 St. John's women's basketball team will be back in action to close out 2022 with a conference tilt at Georgetown on New Year's Eve.
The contest will tip-off at noon be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Jeremy Huber and Maren Walseth on the call from the nation's capital.
After entering at No. 24 in Tuesday's USA Today Coaches' Poll, the Red Storm are ranked in both national polls for the first time since Dec. 15, 2014. The program remained at No. 25 in the Associated Press poll, the first time being included in back-to-back media rankings since Feb. 10 & Feb. 17, 2014.
The national recognition comes on the heels of the best start in program history, 12-0. The Johnnies reached the feat after a 80-51 rout of Wagner on Dec. 21, surpassing the 2004-05 squad that started 11-0. The 12-game winning streak is the longest the school has recorded in 39 years, dating back to 16-consecutive victories during the 1983-84 season.
The Red Storm defense remains stifling allowing opponents to score just 53.8 points per game. The scoring defense ranks 15th nationally as of Dec. 30. In nine of the Johnnies 12 wins this season, the opposition has shot 40 percent or less from field goal range.
In the historic victory over the Seahawks, Jayla Everett set a season-high once again, going off for 24 points and shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. The shooting guard is averaging a team-high 16.8 points per contest, which sits seventh in the league.
Forward Jillian Archer will return to her old stomping grounds, as she appeared in 39 games and made 28 starts over two seasons at Georgetown. After transferring to St. John's, the Santa Monica, Calif., native has quickly established herself as a force in the post. The graduate student has reached double-figures in scoring in five of her last seven outings and ranks seventh in the BIG EAST with 7.8 rebounds per game.
Georgetown comes into Saturday's contest with an 8-5 record and a 1-3 mark in conference play. Last time out, the Hoyas held a 51-48 lead heading into the fourth quarter but were outlasted by Seton Hall in the final 10 minutes and fell on the road, 72-62. Georgetown has been led by the guard tandem of Kelsey Ransom and Kennedy Fauntleroy. Ransom leads the squad in scoring with 11.7 points per game and tops the conference with 2.8 steals per outing. Fauntleroy leads all BIG EAST freshmen scoring 11.5 points per contest. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native has garnered three conference freshman of the week honors.
Saturday at McDonough Arena will mark the 70th time the two longtime conference foes will clash on the hardwood. The Red Storm carry a 40-29 advantage in the all-time series and have taken five of the last six contests.
