No. 25/24 St. John’s Runs Past Georgetown, 68-48, in New Year’s Eve Showdown

Jayla Everett led all scorers with 20 points in the nation’s capital
WASHNGTON D.C. (Dec. 31, 2022)- The No. 25/24 St. John's women's basketball team ran past Georgetown, 68-48, in a New Year's Eve showdown in Washington D.C.
An explosive second-quarter pushed the Red Storm to a 4-0 start in BIG EAST play. and 13-0 overall The Johnnies went on a 17-2 run in the second frame that gave them a comfortable lead and they never looked back.
The St. John's (13-0, 4-0 BIG EAST) defense swarmed the Hoyas (8-6, 1-4) holding them to just 31.6 percent (18-for-57) shooting from the floor, including just 8.3 percent (1-for-12) from three-point land.
The 13-consecutive wins ties for the third-longest streak in program history and St. John's best in 39 years.
Jayla Everett reached the 20-point mark for the third-consecutive game. The shooting guard scored a game-high 20 points and nailed four three-pointers.
Unique Drake logged her best game of the campaign, scoring a season-high 18 points off the bench. The senior set a career-high with four triples made on Saturday afternoon.
Jillian Archer had a monster day on the glass pulling down a season-high 17 boards. The graduate student added nine points.
Kadaja Bailey was the third and final Red Storm player to score in double-figures. The redshirt senior recorded 12 points at McDonough Arena.
It was Everett that got St. John's going early, scoring the squad's first eight points. The St. Louis, Mo., native buried a pair of triples and a floater in the lane to spark the offense.
In the second frame, the Red Storm began to construct a larger lead with a 7-0 run, capped off by a made three-pointer from Danielle Patterson increasing the St. John's lead to 21-11.
After a pair of Hoya baskets, the Johnnies blew the game open with a 14-0 run over 2:38 of gametime. Archer contributed five points during that stretch, highlighted by a finish at the rim in traffic and completing an old-fashioned three-point play.
The two runs combined gave the Johnnies a commanding 40-17 lead headed into the locker room.
In the second half, St. John's remained in control as Drake got going. The Columbia, S.C., native drilled a triple early in the fourth quarter then got out in transition and finished an easy lay-in. The point guard shot an efficient 7-for-10 from the floor.
In the later stages of the fourth quarter, a made free-throw by Everett gave St. John's its biggest lead of the day, 64-36. The Red Storm coasted the rest of the way and kept its undefeated season alive.
The Red Storm will be back on the road on Jan. 4 to take on Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J at 7 p.m.
