Red Storm receiving votes in national polls after win over then-no. 13/14 Creighton
QUEENS, N.Y. - Riding the momentum of a ranked victory and an eight-game winning streak to start the year, the St. John's women's basketball team welcomes Iona to Carnesecca Arena on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. start.
The contest will be streamed on FloSports with Matt Levine on the call from Queens.
Fresh off a crucial 66-62 victory over then-no. 13/14 Creighton on Sunday, the Johnnies have begun the season with an 8-0 record for just the fourth-time in the program's 48-year history and the first since 2014-15, when they won their first 10 games.
The Red Storm have landed on the national radar after bolstering its resume with the top-15 win, receiving votes in both national polls for the first time since 2016. St. John's earned 14 votes in the Associated Press poll and eight in the USA Today Coaches' poll, respectively.
Against the Bluejays in Carnesecca Arena, the Johnnies held on after a late-game 7-0 run from the visitors. Jayla Everett went off for a season-high 20 points to help lift the squad to its highest-rated victory over a ranked opponent since Feb, 15, 2019, when it defeated then-no. 8/7 Marquette at home, 81-74.
Everett is now leading the team after Sunday's scoring outburst averaging 15.3 points per game. For her efforts, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and received an All-MET Honorable Mention nod. A capable long-range shooter, the redshirt senior ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with 17 made triples in seven games.
Two days prior to Sunday's win, St. John's captured its conference opener on the road at Hinkle Fieldhouse over Butler, 65-57. Once again faced with a late-run from the opposition, the Red Storm closed out the game on a 9-2 run, courtesy of Kadaja Bailey. The redshirt senior scored the final nine points in Indianapolis over the final 1:10 of play. St. John's is off to a 2-0 start to BIG EAST competition and is the lone remaining undefeated team in the league.
Redshirt senior Rayven Peeples has provided a lift in the paint, the forward is averaging a team-high 9.4 boards and chips in 8.5 points per outing. Her rebound mark ranks fourth in the BIG EAST. Against Creighton, she grabbed 11 boards and posted a season-high four blocks.
Iona makes the short trip over from New Rochelle with a 4-3 record on the year. In its Last time out, the Gaels moved past LIU, 64-55, on the heels of a dominant first half. Iona held the Sharks to just 13 points over the first two quarters of play on Monday. On the year, Iona is led by Preseason All-MAAC selections Juana Camilion and Ketsia Athias, who average 14.0 and 13.3 points per game, respectively.
The Gaels have played a very local schedule to date, St. John's will be the fifth school located in New York City or on Long Island that Iona has faced this year.
The last time the two played, St. John's blew out Iona, 61-35, on Nov. 9, 2018 inside Carnesecca Arena. In that contest, then-freshmen Bailey made her collegiate debut and scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Thursday's meeting is slated to be her 124thappearance in the Red & White. The Red Storm hold a steady 14-2 advantage in the all-time series.
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a St. John's Basketball car magnet. To purchase tickets visit RedStormTix.com or call 1-888-GO-STORM
