Red Storm Drops Battle with Bluejays

St. John’s three game winning-streak snapped with loss 107-59 to Creighton
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2022) – St. John's women's basketball saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Friday when the team fell to Creighton, 107-59, at Carnesecca Arena on Friday afternoon.
Danielle Cosgrove led the Red Storm (10-16, 6-10 BIG EAST) in points with 12 as she sank 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. The forward also logged a team-high seven rebounds. Unique Drake paced the squad with four assists and Leilani Correa tallied a pair of steals in the loss.
The Johnnies battled back-and-forth with the Bluejays (19-7, 14-4 BIG EAST) from the jump, but a 10-2 run by Creighton put the Red Storm behind, 17-8, with 3:33 on the clock. St. John's remained stagnant, allowing an 8-0 run capped off with a three from Lauren Jensen to put the Red Storm behind, 25-11, with 1:21 left in the quarter. Despite a pair of foul shots made by Correa and a triple from Cosgrove, the Bluejays ended the first quarter by making six of their last seven shots to hold the 30-16 edge at the break.
Camree Clegg looked to get the offense going in the second period, sinking a 3-pointer just 15 seconds into the quarter, but a five-point swing by Creighton followed to leave the Red Storm behind, 35-19. An 8-0 rally by the opposition was snapped as Clegg added a layup at the 4:12 mark, but St. John's remained behind by 20. The Johnnies allowed their second 8-0 run of the quarter to trail, 54-26, before calling a timeout with 2:06 on the clock. Back-to-back buckets from Emma Nolan helped the Red Storm offensive effort, but a layup from Jensen as time expired put St. John's behind, 58-31, at the half.
Correa started the third quarter with layup but an 8-0 run by Creighton kept the Johnnies behind, 68-35, with 7:23 on the clock. Coming out of a Red Storm timeout, Drake scored for St. John's but a 10-0 rally for the Bluejays with 3:06 in the third to cut into the deficit for the Johnnies. Getting outscored 31-11 in the period, St. John's headed to the final frame down, 89-42.
Cosgrove scored back-to-back triples to begin the fourth quarter and a three by Drake left the team behind, 91-51, with 7:31 to play. An 8-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Creighton's Jayme Horan put the Red Storm down by 51 with 1:32 remaining. Nolan went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe for the final points for of the game, sealing the loss for St. John's.
Six Bluejay players scored in double figures with Jensen and Emma Ronsiek leading the way, scoring 16 points apiece. Horan and Morgan Maly added 14 points off the bench. As a team, Creighton shot 62.7 percent from the floor and sank 20 3-pointers during the game.
