The Red Storm are off to a strong start, winning seven of its first eight matches. The resume includes victories over Boston College, Delaware and Yale. The Johnnies will look for their second triumph over an Ivy League foe on Saturday.
The team's success has caught the attention of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as two Johnnies garnered national recognition. In the latest rankings, Axel Vila Antuna was tabbed the no. 97 singles player in Division I tennis. Antuna and teammate Ignacio Garcia were ranked no. 58 in doubles.
A trio of freshman Carl Gustavsson, Ryota Kaneda and Vlad Vasilache have risen to the occasion and contributed right away. Gustavsson has logged a team-high six singles wins while Vasilache has recorded three-straight victories and remains undefeated in singles. Kaneda and partner Charlie James have established themselves in the no. 2 doubles slot. The pair is tied for the team lead in wins with four in partner play.
For Dartmouth, Saturday will mark its first home contest since Jan. 29. The Big Green hold a 3-4 overall record after recently finishing 1-2 at the ECAC Indoor Championships, an early season tournament against the rest of the Ivy League.
Following Saturday's match, the Red Storm will head down south for two matches in Florida against Florida Atlantic on March 3 and Florida Gulf Coast on March 5.
