Leah Anderson Named Most Outstanding Performer at BIG EAST Indoor Championships

St. John’s captured two event titles, five medals
CHICAGO- The St. John's track and field team competed against the top athletes in the conference at the BIG EAST Championships at the Gately Indoor Track and Field Facility in Chicago.
18 Johnnies competed in 14 events, racking up five medals. The Red Storm finished in fourth with 75 points, marking the eighth straight season the Johnnies have finished within the top four in the conference.
Leah Anderson dominated the competition in Chicago and was unanimously named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer in the track events. Anderson was also honored as the High Point Performer of the meet with 22 individual points. This marks the second straight indoor season Anderson has earned both distinctions from the conference.
The graduate sprinter broke added to her historic performance by breaking the BIG EAST indoor record in both the 200-meter and 400-meter races. Anderson defended her BIG EAST title in the 400-meter dash with a blazing time of 52.94 and added a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.41 which also breaks her own school record. She becomes the third St. John's track and field athlete to win five or more events in a career at the indoor conference championships, joining Youree Spence and Pariis Garcia.
Skyy Diop recorded personal bests in both of her races at the conference championships, including a time of 54.25 in the 400-meter dash to earn a silver medal. The senior out of Ontario added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.61. Brooklyn Chestnut and Tatyana Mckenzie rounded out an excellent performance for the Red Storm sprinters with bronze medals in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, respectively. McKenzie added to the list of Johnnies with new personal bests with career low times in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dash. Onassha Rogers finished just behind in Chestnut in the 60-meters in fourth with a time of 7.64.
The team of Chestnut, Anderson, Diop and McKenzie earned the second silver and fourth total medal with a time of 3:44.83.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Antonia Frazier and Rushellee Jones each posted career best times at 8.85 and 8.98 seconds, respectively.
Claire Cushing set a new personal best in the 3,000-meter run by more than eight seconds, finishing with a time of 9:52.45.
In the field events, Samantha Morillo also posted personal bests in both the weight throw and shot put. Morillo captured the fifth medal of the meet for St. John's with a shot put throw of 13.47 meters and finished in eighth in the weight throw with a heave of 16.86 meters. Amanda Belgrave logged her personal best in the triple jump (11.64m) while Megan Ladd added to the Red Storm tally in the pole vault by clearing the 3.35-meter bar to earn eighth place.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday when it travels to Boston to take part in the ECAC Championships.
