St. John’s Drops Matchup at Hofstra, 12-6

Pride defense prevails in Long Island Cup consolation game
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team fell to Hofstra on Sunday afternoon, 12-6, at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The stifling Hofstra (3-2) defense held the Red Storm scoreless in the second half to lift them to a Long Island Cup consolation game victory. The Pride goaltender Mac Gates recorded a game-high 14 saves.
St. John's (0-4) midfielders Jack Lutfi and Patrick Ednie each registered two goals while attackman Jonathan Huberand Brian Kelly added one tally. Caleb Zuhoski, Kelly and Ednie contributed one assist apiece.
Kaden Quirk logged 10 saves on the afternoon in Hempstead, the freshman held the Pride scoreless for over 19 minutes of game time in the second and third quarters. Jake Oemcke won a season-high seven face-offs in 13 attempts.
In the early going, Hofstra jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Huber ripped one into the twine off a look from Kelly with 3:02 remaining in the first period.
The Red Storm once again cut the deficit to a single goal, when Zuhoski swung it to the waiting stick of Kelly. The Red Hook, N.Y., native painted the top right corner of the net to make it 4-3, early in the second period. With Kelly's goal, the freshman attackman became the first St. John's rookie to record 10 points in his first four contests, since teammate Huber logged 13 as a redshirt freshman in 2019.
Hofstra took control orchestrating three straight goals to take an 7-3 lead in the second quarter. The Red Storm shifted the momentum after a determined goal from Lutfi. The sophomore scooped a groundball and absorbed contact from of a swarm of Hofstra defenders, before shaking his way free to put one past the netminder with 7:08 remaining.
After a quick Hofstra goal, Ednie and Lutfi each logged their second goal of the afternoon to make it 8-6 at the break.
The third quarter was a defensive stand-off as there was no goals until the final minute of the third quarter. Quirk kept the Johnnies in it with four crucial saves before a pair of Gerard Kane goals in the last 58 seconds of the period gave the Pride a 10-6 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final 15 minutes, the Red Storm were halted on a pair of extra-man opportunities midway through the quarter. Kelly fired one from close-range, but Hofstra's Gates was there once again, denying the man-up opportunity with another stop. The Pride notched the final score with 2:16 remaining to make it 12-6.
After being on the road for three consecutive matchups, the Red Storm will return to DaSilva Memorial Field on March 5 to take on Manhattan at 12:30 p.m.
