QUEENS, N.Y.- After three consecutive contests on the road, the St. John's lacrosse team returns home on Saturday to face Manhattan at DaSilva Memorial Field. First face-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN3. Nick Faria and Kevin Connelly will have the call from DaSilva Memorial Field.
Standout freshman Brian Kelly was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The attackman garnered recognition after a three-goal and two-assist weekend at the Long Island Cup.
The rookie leads the team with 10 points (6 G, 4 A). The Red Hook, N.Y., native is the first Johnnie to reach the 10-point mark in his first four games since teammate Jonathan Huber logged 13 as a redshirt freshman in 2019.
Kelly is joined by St. John's veterans Huber, Dylan Willis and Patrick Ednie as the catalysts for the Johnnies offense. Huber leads the team with eight goals. The redshirt senior tied a career-high with a five-goal outing against Stony Brook on Feb. 25. Willis, the senior midfielder has dished out a team-high six helpers and added three goals on the year. Ednie, a Raleigh, N.C., native, ranks third on the team with five goals, as he recorded his first-career hat-trick at Bucknell on Feb. 19
Saturday's contest will mark the first meeting in the history of these two programs and the first time since 2006 that St. John's has met a New York City school on the lacrosse field. On March 29, 2006, the Red Storm defeated Wagner 16-4 in Queens.
Manhattan will arrive at DaSilva Memorial Field with a .500 record on the year. After falling 17-7 in the season-opener to national powerhouse then-No. 2 Duke, the Jaspers defeated VMI, 14-7, in their home opener. After a 9-6 loss to Navy, Manhattan moved past Wagner, 11-5 in its most recent game.
Offensively, the Jaspers are led by attackman Kyle Gucwa, who has contributed 14 goals in four games. In the win over Wagner, the junior added a career-high five goals. Liam Walshe ranks second on the team with 12 points (8 G's, 4 A's)
Between the pipes, Manhattan's Brendan Krebs has been stellar averaging 11.75 saves per game. In 2021, the netminder was named MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and ranked ninth nationally with a 9.36 GAA.
Following Saturday's tilt, the Red Storm will play its final four non-conference games on the road. The Johnnies will return home on April 2 for their BIG EAST opener, when they face Villanova.
