Junior Axel Vila Antuna defeats no. 64 player in the nation
HARRISON, N.Y.- The St. John's men's tennis suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, 4-3, to a strong Old Dominion side at the Lifetime Fitness Center in Harrison, N.Y.
Junior Axel Vila Antuna defeated Old Dominion's top-player, no. 64 Francois Le Tellec, by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 3-2 on the no. 1 court.
Giuseppe De Camelis marched back after falling in the first set, 3-6. The Trani, Italy, native won the next pair of sets, 6-4, 10-5, over the Monarchs' Oliver Tobisch to tally a point.
Charlie James impressed in his season singles debut with a lengthy three-set victory. The senior outlasted ODU's Yehven Sirous, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 10-6, on in the no. 3 spot.
Old Dominion moves to 3-3 on the year and split in their weekend trip to the Big Apple after falling to Columbia, 5-2, on Saturday.
Next on tap for the Red Storm is a doubleheader on Thursday at the USTA National Tennis Center. The matches against nearby foes Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn will conclude the five-match homestand.
