St. John’s Dominates in 96-62 Win at Xavier

The Johnnies complete season sweep of Xavier
CINCINNATI (Feb. 6, 2022) – For the second time this week, the St. John's women's basketball team took down Xavier, this time at the Cintas Center, topping the BIG EAST foe 96-62 on Sunday to complete the season sweep.
Three Red Storm (8-15,4-9 BIG EAST) players scored in double figures with Kadaja Bailey leading the way with 21 points. The Long Beach, N.Y. native went 7-for-8 from the field and 7-for7 from the foul line. Leilani Correa notched 19 during the victory while Rayven Peeples tallied 14 points. Peeples also led St. John's with eight rebounds.
The Johnnie offense got off to a hot start as Correa scored five straight before the Musketeers (7-15, 2-11 BIG EAST) burned a timeout with the Red Storm leading 14-6 with 4:54 in the quarter. An 8-0 rally for St. John 's followed with a layup by Bailey extended the 22-8 advantage for the Red Storm. Despite Xavier ending the period on a 4-0 run, St. John's led 26-15 after the first 10 minutes.
The Red Storm did not let up in the second quarter, with Danielle Cosgrove providing a spark by scoring basket that led to a Johnnies 12-2 run with 5:47 remaining in the half. Leading 43-24 at the media timeout, a 5-0 run that included a bucket by Bailey and a triple from Unique Drake led to Xavier using a timeout with 3:15 remaining in the half. St. John's finished the quarter shooting 61.1 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from beyond the arc, and at the break, the Red Storm held the 58-33 lead.
Coming out of the locker room, the Johnnies' offense hit a lull, shooting just 33.3 percent in the quarter. With a seven-point effort by Bailey and six points from Correa, St. John's was able to outscore Xavier 19-15 and kept the 77-48 edge.
In the final frame, the Johnnies held Xavier to 23.1 percent shooting and did not give up a 3-pointer in the period. St. Johns went 8-for-15 from the floor including triples from Sitota Gines and Sara Zabrecky. The team finished the contest outscoring the Musketeers 19-14, leading to the 34-point victory.
The 58 points scored by the Johnnies in the opening half were the most scored through 20 minutes all season, besting the 54 points posted against both DePaul (Dec. 19) and Georgetown (Jan. 25). The 96 points in the game were also a season high for St. John's. The Johnnies have now won 13-striaght games against the Musketeers dating back to the 2015-16 season
Up next, the Red Storm will face off against Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
