Walk-Off Fielder’s Choice Sends Home The Winning Run for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 16, 2022) – A groundball down the first base line from Anna Freveletti brought in Amy Mallah for the game-winning run to lift St. John's past Fairfield, 4-3, at Red Storm Field.
Freveletti tallied the walk-off RBI and Mallah the game-clinching run on the fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh. Meisha Murray finished 2-for-3 from the plate while Aneese Thompson turned in a 2-for-2 effort recording an RBI and a stand-up double. London Jarrard and Natalie Casto registered a hit apiece.
Madison Wallace tabbed an RBI single as she put one up during the bottom of the fourth to record her first RBI of the year.
Starting Pitcher Hannah Mearns notched six strikeouts in five innings of work and allowed just one earned run. Erin Brown entered the circle in relief during the sixth inning and was tabbed with her first win of the season.
The Stags (4-10) were the first to score in the second inning as the visitors' Allie Bridgman blasted a ball into right field before coming home on an error by the shortstop. Thompson doubled in the bottom of the inning for the Red Storm but was left stranded, to keep Fairfield ahead, 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, St. John's converted two hits to two runs to jump ahead of Fairfield, 2-1. Working with two outs, Thompson was hit by a pitch to get on base before a Casto single put runners on first and second. The speedy Marra came in to pinch run and beat the throw home on a Wallace single. With bases loaded again, Murray reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that plated Casto.
Fairfield answered in the fifth inning when Haley Updegraff came home on a single to center field. The Red Storm responded by pulling back in-front in the home half of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Thompson battled through an 11-pitch at-bat and ultimately notched a single through the gap to bring Santos home.
With the Johnnies up, 3-2, the Stags added in another run in the top of the seventh after Morgan Sylvestre doubled and came home on a Mikayla Rubin single to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mallah singled to left field before Jarrard singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Freveletti made contact and sent a grounder to first base, the throw was not in time to catch Mallah, who represented the game-winning run.
The walk-off win on Wednesday completed a season sweep of the Stags for the Red Storm. Earlier this season, the Johnnies took away the victory, 7-1, at the USF Tournament.
The Red Storm will make its first BIG EAST road trip this weekend when it travels to Providence. The three-game series from Glay Field will begin on Friday at 3 p.m. The entire series will be streamed on FloSports.
