Red Storm and Friars will meet again on Sunday
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 18, 2022) – The St. John's softball team split a series-opening doubleheader with Providence on Friday afternoon at Glay Field.
Game One
A sixth-inning, two-RBI single from Melanie Santos powered the Red Storm to a 2-1 victory in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
Natalie Alheidt singled and scored the game-tying run. London Jarrard also tallied a base knock, extending her hitting streak to five games.
Erin Brown allowed only one base runner over 4.1 innings of one-hit relief to record her second win in as many opportunities. The junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., retired the final nine Friars she faced.
For the Friars, Tori Grifone pitched all 7.0 innings and struck out eight batters.
Providence got on the board first, as Lauren Nunez singled through the left side with runners on first and second to bring home Jessica Tomaso.
The Friars saw another opportunity to score with bases loaded in the bottom of the third, but a clutch double play from Amy Mallah to Santos to Anese Thompson kept Providence from advancing its lead.
Trailing by one late in the game, the Red Storm rallied in the sixth. Alheidt kicked things off with a one-out single before Meisha Murray reached on an error and Mallah walked to load the bases. After Jarrard went down looking for the inning's second out, Santos stepped to the plate and smacked a two-run single to center, scoring Alheidt and Murray to give the Red Storm a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish.
Game Two
Reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Daniela Alvarez tossed 6.0 scoreless innings for Providence on its way to an 8-0 win in the second game of Friday's twin-bill.
Jarrard went 2-for-3 in the batter's box to record her sixth multi-hit game of the season. Murray and Natalie Casto also tallied one hit apiece for the Red Storm.
After Alvarez struck out the side in the top of the first, Providence plated four runs on four hits in the home half of the frame to open an early lead.
The Friars stuck again in the third and fourth innings, adding one run in each frame.
St. John's put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings, but could not push across a run.
Providence's final runs came in the bottom of the sixth, as Lea Kosinki logged an RBI single before scoring in the next at-bat to end the game.
St. John's and Providence will close the series at Glay Field on Sunday at 12 p.m. The contest will be streamed on FloSports.
