St. John's Hits The Road For First BIG EAST Trip to Providence

Red Storm will look to pick up its first BIG EAST wins
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 17, 2022) – The St. John's softball team will play its first BIG EAST road series this weekend at Providence.
The Red Storm and Friars will begin the series with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 2 p.m. before a single game on Sunday at noon. The contests will be streamed on FloSports and live stats will be available on Friars.com.
St. John's picked up a mid-week win against local foe Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field. With runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh inning, Anna Freveletti sent a grounder to first base allowing Amy Mallah to score the game-winning run. Meisha Murray finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Anese Thompson turned in a 2-for-2 effort recording an RBI and a stand-up double. Madison Wallace tallied an RBI single.
Hannah Mearns notched six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work and allowed just one earned run. Erin Brown entered the circle in relief during the sixth inning and logged her first win of the season.
St. John's went 0-3 in its BIG EAST opening weekend against Connecticut at Red Storm Field. London Jarrard tallied two hits in the Tuesday series finale to record her fifth multi-hit game of the season. Pitching 11.1 innings across two games, Carolina Zamudio fanned 10 batters while Mearns put in 3.2 innings of work in the first game and notched four strikeouts.
Mearns and Zamudio lead the Red Storm's pitching staff, tallying 48.0 and 47.0 innings, respectively. Mearns boasts a 3.50 ERA while Zamudio has recorded 42 strikeouts. Jarrard is the Red Storm's hits leader recording 19 hits in 49 at-bats for a .388 batting average. Murray follows Jarrard with 15 hits and has scored a team-high seven runs. The senior has also recorded nine stolen bases on eleven attempts.
Heading into the weekend, the Friars are 14-6 with their most recent wins coming in a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday against Merrimack. Providence went 2-1 in its BIG EAST opening weekend falling to Seton Hall by a score of 6-0 in six innings on Thursday before taking both ends of a Friday doubleheader by a combined score of 5-2. The Friars return All-BIG EAST Second Team Pick and reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Daniela Alvarez. Alvarez allowed just two runs and five hits in the wins against Seton Hall. Micaela Abbatine was named to the league's weekly honor roll after she went 4-for-8 at the plate in three games last weekend, posting a .500 batting average. She recorded an RBI and a run scored in the Friar's 2-1 win over Seton Hall on Friday.
The Red Storm leads the series against Providence, 55-40. The Friars, however, own an advantage over the Red Storm in Rhode Island with a 24-21 record in the Ocean State.
Last season, the Friars went 5-16-1 and finished eighth in the league.
