Nine Red Storm fencers will travel to South Bend, Ind. for four-day competition
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's fencing program will look to capture its second national championship in program history at the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., starting tomorrow.
A live feed of rounds one through three of competition will be available on Notre Dame's athletics website. The semifinal and championship rounds on Friday and Sunday, respectively, will be live streamed on ESPN3.
The Red Storm will send nine fencers, six male and three female, to the four-day competition that will commence with women's preliminary rounds tomorrow and conclude with the men's championship rounds on Sunday.
Head Coach Yury Gelman boasts a long and storied history at the fencing national championships. The six-time member of the United States Olympic fencing coaching staff has seen his team finish sixth or better, collectively, in 28 consecutive NCAA Championships. Gelman has coached 25 individual national champions, most recently Karolina Cieslar in 2019.
Saber fencers and brothers Fares Ferjani and Ahmed Ferjani will make the trip to Indiana in pursuit of a championship. Fares will make his second trip to the NCAA Championships, finishing third in 2019, while Ahmed will make his first appearance at the national championships.
Jan Jurkiewicz and Cesar Colon will represent the men's foil portion of the Red Storm fencing program. Colon will compete against the best fencers in the country for the second straight season. In 2021, Colon finished in a tie for third to earn First Team All-America honors, winning 16 bouts. Jurkiewicz will lock swords at the NCAA Championships for the first time, after being unable to participate due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In men's epee, Ivan Zagoruiko qualified for nationals for the third time in his career, earning a Third Team All-America honor in 2019. Freshman Mark Dolgonos will battle for a title for the first time.
On the women's side, epee fencers Nicole Gavrilko and Andrea Rizzi will both compete at the NCAA Championships for the third time in their respective careers. In 2021, Gavrilko tied for third to earn First Team All-America Honors. Freshman sensation Julia Cieslar will look to win the second women's saber title in program history after her older sister, Karolina, won in 2019.
The field of 144 fencers will first battle in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. The top four finishers in round-robin competition will fence in 15-touch semifinal bouts with the winners competing against each other to determine first and second place. The remaining two fencers will finish in a tie for third.
A school's place finish will be determined by points earned by each student-athlete. A team will be awarded one point for every individual victory during round-robin competition.
