Red Storm and Lions will meet for the first time in three years
QUEENS, N.Y. -- After winning its second consecutive weekend series against Quinnipiac, the St. John's baseball team will wrap up a 13-game homestand against the Columbia Lions on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The midweek contest will be live streamed on ESPN3 with Jonny Wincott and Joey Jarzynka on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm has won seven of its last eight games and has scored five or more runs in each of those contests.
Tate Ballestero paces the Johnnies in batting average, hitting at a .402 clip and leads the team in multi-hit games with 11. The Morristown, N.J., native also boasts a squad-best .490 on-base percentage and has tallied 35 hits to lead all St. John's position players. Ballestero remains one of two Johnnies to start every game in 2022.
Another outstanding newcomer, Kevin Michaels continues to provide a steady presence at the plate. The Encinitas, Calif., native is currently batting .368 in 21 games and leads the team with 22 RBIs. The Palomar Community College transfer paces the Red Storm in multi-RBI games with six such outings, including a single game-high six RBIs against Sacred Heart on March 18. The BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 21 has produced at least one run in seven of his last eight starts.
In the midst of a power surge, David Glancy boasts a team-leading .609 slugging percentage. The redshirt sophomore hit three solo home runs against Hofstra last Tuesday, just the second Johnnie to launch three round trippers. Over the weekend, Glancy added a double and a triple against Quinnipiac, bringing his season extra-base hits total to 12, a team high. The Neptune, N.J., native holds the longest hitting streak on the roster, recording a base hit in 12 straight contests.
Chuck Sanzio recorded a save in three straight appearances to earn a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod on Monday. The sophomore righthander pitched 3.1 scoreless innings over the five-game week with four strikeouts while only allowing one hit. Sanzio has tallied five saves, one in each of his last five outings. The Haddonfield, N.J., native leads all Red Storm primary relievers with a 2.53 ERA.
Jackson Tucker was a constant threat on the basepaths over the weekend, swiping six bases against Quinnipiac to add to his team-high total of 10 steals in 20 games. The Staten Island native has reached base in 18 straight games to lead the Johnnies in that category. The freshman outfielder sits second on the squad with 18 runs scored and is currently batting .299.
After struggling to start the season, Nick Cirelli is batting a solid .286 in 20 games, good for fifth on the team. The everyday first baseman enjoyed a career day against Quinnipiac on Saturday with a 3-for-4 effort with a double and three RBIs.
Columbia enters Wednesday's matchup with a record of 7-12, most recently dropping a three-game series to Penn.
Three Lions boast batting averages of .300 or better, led by freshman infielder Anton Lazits. Lazits is currently batting .313 with a home run, a triple, five doubles and six RBIs.
Righthander Justin Tucker has yet to allow an earned run in his six appearances this season. The junior has only allowed five hits in 7.0 innings.
St. John's leads the all-time series with Columbia, 28-14, most recently snapping a seven-game losing streak with 22-7 win on April 3, 2019.
The Johnnies also scored against the Lions in 2010 when Joe Panik delivered a walk-off single to lift the Red Storm to a 22-21 triumph.
