Ian Murphy struck out eight Dons in 4.0 innings of work
SAN FRANCISCO (March 4, 2022) – For the second straight day, the University of San Francisco erased an early St. John's lead on its way to an 8-3 win at Benedetti Diamond.
Ian Murphy struck out eight batters and allowed only two earned runs in 4.0 innings of work, but was tagged with his second loss of the season.
At the dish, freshman Luke Orbon went 2-for-4 with a pair of extra-base hits and two RBIs, recording a run-scoring double and his first collegiate home run.
Tate Ballestero tripled for the second time in as many days in a 2-for-3 effort.
Nick Cirelli doubled and drove in a run for the second consecutive day.
In the field, St. John's committed a season-high five errors, leading to two unearned runs.
Orbon provided the early offense for St. John's launching a solo shot over the right field wall to lead off the top of the second.
The Red Storm, which left a total of three runners on base in the third and fourth innings, kept San Francisco off the board until the home half of the fourth, when the Dons pushed across four runs, two of which were unearned, to take a 4-1 advantage.
USF added two more runs in the fifth, all of which came with two outs. Gabe Giosso sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left before back-to-back hit-by-pitches set the table for a Brandon Greim RBI base knock.
St. John's left a man on third for the second straight inning in the top of the sixth before the Dons used a pair of doubles to plate a run and move ahead 7-1 after six.
After Dylan Johnson left the bags full of Dons in the seventh, the Red Storm chipped into the USF lead in the top of the eighth. Ballestero led off the inning with a single to center before Orbon and Cirelli registered back-to-back RBI doubles to left, bringing the Johnnies within four, 7-3.
USF bumped its lead back to five with a two-out RBI single off the bat of Lane Oliphant in the bottom of the eighth.
The Red Storm and Dons will return to action tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. ET first pitch at Benedetti Diamond.
