Amy Mallah notched four RBIs in win for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 10, 2022) – Behind a four RBI performance from Amy Mallah and a three-run homer by Anese Thompson, the St. John's softball team took down Butler, 8-3, in the BIG EAST series finale on Sunday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
Mallah went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and four RBIs. Thompson recorded her second home run this season as the freshman came away with a three-run blast. Meisha Murray notched her seventh multi-hit game of the season as the Santa Clarita, Calif. native produced three hits and scored two runs.
Red Storm (9-27, 4-11 BIG EAST) ace Carolina Zamudio moved to 4-11 with the win after pitching her seventh complete game of the season. The Mexico City native allowed three runs on six hits and fanned four batters.
Butler (21-14, 9-5 BIG EAST) pitcher Karli Ricketts fell to 11-4 on the year. She pitched 5.2 innings and gave up eight runs on seven hits, allowed five walks and tallied eight strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, Jarrard started a rally for the Red Storm as she recorded a two-out single and became the first base runner of the day for the Johnnies. Thompson reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and Mallah sent a triple to right field to score both runners and give St. John's the early 2-1 advantage.
After a scoreless second inning, Butler's Paige Dorsett sent a sacrifice fly centerfield, scoring Ellie Boyer and bringing the Bulldogs within one. Butler continued to rally in the fifth when Doresett's RBI double tied the game at two apiece.
The stalemate was short lived as the St. John's bats came alive in the home half of the inning, beginning with Murray reaching on an infield single. An error and a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Casto sent the runner to third before Ricketts intentionally walked both Jarrard and pinch-hitter Madison Wallace to load the bases with one away. A wild pitch by the senior broke open the game for St. John's as Murray came home on the play. Holding all the momentum Mallah sent a single to center to put the Johnnies ahead 5-2.
The Bulldogs did not go away quietly as Zamudio gave up a long ball to Teagan O'Rilley in the following inning. However, the freshman maintained composure, striking out her next batter and forcing a pop out to end a potential Butler rally.
Murray recorded a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth before advancing to second on the next play. After Jarrard was intentionally walked for her third time, Thompson sent a three-run blast over the right field fence to put the Johnnies ahead, 8-3.
Needing three outs to secure the conference victory for the Red Storm, Zamudio went to work in the circle and sent the first two Butler batter back to the dugout. Down to their final out, Bulldog outfielder Monique Hoosen tallied a single off the freshman pitcher, bringing Dorsett back to the plate. Zamudio forced the redshirt freshman to foul out, ending the game and giving the Johnnies their first victory of the series.
St. John's will be back in action on Wednesday when the team faces LIU at 3 p.m. at Red Storm Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
