Red Storm comes out strong with four-run first inning
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 13, 2022) – A four-run first inning was enough for the St. John's softball team to overpower LIU, 4-1, at Red Storm Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Camryn Steele went 2-for-4 in the victory with 2 RBIs while London Jarrard extended her hitting streak to four games as the freshman came away with one hit, one RBI and a run scored. After recording four RBIs in Sunday's contest with Butler, Amy Mallah added in another RBI single along with a run scored.
Angela Saric recorded her first win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings. The senior allowed two hits and one run while fanning two batters. Carolina Zamudio was tabbed with the save with 1.2 innings of work as she faced the minimum and tallied four punchouts.
For the visiting Sharks (14-23), Zoe Estoppy fell to 1-2 on the season after pitching 2.0 innings, giving up six hits and four runs. Kira Buckner pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing three hits to the Red Storm (10-27).
Hannah Mearns earned the start in the circle and the sophomore retired the first three batters of the game. The Red Storm offense came out swinging as Meisha Murray singled up the middle to start the home half of the frame. The senior stole second before Natalie Casto sent a single to right center to put runners on the corners for Jarrard. The Carlsbad, Calif., native fired an RBI single to right field, plating Murray for the first run of the day.
Anese Thompson reached on a fielder's choice, resulting in the first out of the inning, before Mallah singled to the shortstop to bring Jarrard home for the 2-0 advantage. Kaitlyn Lologo was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Madison Wallace hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the frame. Steele capitalized under pressure with a clutch single to center field, bringing home Lologo and Mallah and giving St. John's the 4-0 edge heading to the second.
LIU saw its first baserunner of the day on a two-out single, but the opportunity was quickly erased by a Mearns punch-out in the top of the second. The Santa Monica, Calif., native put in another scoreless inning of work before St. John's Head Coach Bob Guerrero went to his bullpen, bringing Saric to the circle to start the fourth.
A pair of scoreless innings followed for both squads, but the Sharks had a chance to get on the board in the sixth with runners on second and third. Saric walked Victoria Zakto to load the bases before Guererro made another call to his bullpen, bringing in Zamudio. Catcher interference allowed one run to score with one out in the frame for LIU. Still with the bases loaded, Zamudio recorded back-to-back strikeouts to minimize the damage done.
After a scoreless bottom of the inning for the Johnnies, Zamudio went back to work in the circle looking to earn her first save this season. The Mexico City native posted a pair of punchouts in route to securing the Red Storm's second-straight win.
St. John's will return to action this weekend when the team travels to Chicago to take on DePaul in a three-game series. First pitch from Friday's twin bill is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
