St. John’s Travels to Hofstra for Midweek Matchup

Red Storm and Pride to meet for the second time this season
QUEENS, N.Y. - After a three-game series at No. 25 Connecticut, the St. John's baseball team will travel to Hempstead, N.Y., to take on Hofstra in the return game of a home-and-home set. First pitch on Tuesday from University Field is set for 3 p.m.
The midweek matchup will be live streamed on FloSports, and live stats will be available on StatBroadcast.com.
Tate Ballestero continues to provide stability at the plate, leading the team in batting average at .345. The Morristown, N.J., native also paces the Red Storm with a .436 on-base percentage with 17 walks and three hit-by-pitches. The redshirt sophomore has tallied a team-best 41 hits, including 12 for extra bases, and boasts 12 games with multiple hits. Ballestero is one of two position players to log a start in all 32 games this season.
Sitting just behind Ballestero in batting average is Kevin Michaels, who is hitting at a .343 clip. The redshirt sophomore slugged a grand slam against UConn on Friday, the second by a Johnnie in the last two weeks, and now owns the team lead in RBIs with 30. The Encinitas, Calif., native paces the Johnnies with eight starts with at least two RBIs, including three contests with four or more runs batted in. The infielder ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in RBIs per game, averaging 1.03 per contest.
Jackson Tucker is a consistent presence at the top of the lineup, leading the Red Storm in total walks with 24. The freshman outfielder is one of four Johnnies with an on-base percentage at .400 or better, reaching first at a .419 clip and ranks second in the conference in walk rate with an average of 0.86 free passes per game. The Staten Island native also paces St. John's with 11 stolen bases on 13 attempts.
The other position player to start every game for the Red Storm, David Glancy tallied at least one hit in all three games against the Huskies over the weekend. The Neptune, N.J., native leads the team with eight home runs which also ranks fifth in the BIG EAST and slugs at a .569 clip. Glancy has recorded a squad-best 14 extra-base knocks and paces the Johnnies with 28 runs scored.
Freshman lefthander Joe Mascio will get the start for the Johnnies on Tuesday. In his previous start against Columbia on March 30, Mascio earned his second win of the season, tossing 3.0 hitless innings with three punchouts. The Sewell, N.J., native is one of three pitchers to boast two wins or more in 2022.
Hofstra enters Tuesday's matchup with a record of 13-13 and is coming off 5-2 win over UNC-Wilmington on Sunday. The Pride owns a 7-5 record at University Field, including a win in its most recent home series against conference foe College of Charleston.
Hofstra's leader at the plate is former Johnnie Brian Morrell. Morrell leads the Pride in several offensive categories, including batting average (.348), on-base percentage (.441), slugging percentage (.543) and RBIs (20). Steve Harrington leads Hofstra with four home runs while four other hitters have slugged two round trippers this season.
On the mound, senior righthander Mike McKenna has yet to allow an earned run in seven innings and has tallied two saves this season.
St. John's leads the all-time series with Hofstra, 63-11, winning the most recent matchup on March 22 by a score of 9-7 on the back of three solo home runs by Glancy. The Johnnies have won the last six meetings dating back to 2017.
