Huber leads Johnnies into BIG EAST contest after record-breaking performance
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team will travel to no. 19/18 Denver on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. ET contest.
Saturday's contest will air live on Altitude TV and ESPN Denver 1600. Brad Thompson and Eric Law will have the call from Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
In its last time out, St. John's fell in an offensive explosion to Marquette, 23-13 on April 9. Jonathan Huber broke the program's single-game scoring record in that contest, pouring in eight goals at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Brian Kelly and Huber combined for all 13 St. John's goals in its last outing. The Red Storm's high-powered scoring duo proved efficient, hitting the 13-goal mark on just 22 shots. Dylan Willis, Jack Lutfi and Caleb Zuhoski each added a pair of helpers against the Golden Eagles. Kelly added one assist to tie his season-high with six points.
Huber's historic performance is currently tied for the single-game high of any player in NCAA Division I lacrosse this season. The redshirt senior has been firing on all cylinders, as he has tallied 33 goals and five assists through 11 games. His mark mark of 3.0 goals per game ranks fourth in the BIG EAST and tied for 26th nationally. The Great River, N.Y., native was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference office announced on Monday.
Kelly trails only Huber for the team lead in points (21 G, 16 A) on the season. The freshman currently averages 3.7 points per contest which ranks sixth in the country among all NCAA Division I freshman, as of games played through April 14. In 11 games, the Red Hook, N.Y., native has already racked up the most points by a St. John's freshman since 2011. Johnnies all-time greats Kevin Cernuto posted 41 and Kieran McArdle logged 39 points during their rookie campaigns that year.
Saturday will mark the ninth meeting all-time between the two programs, who have met every season since the Pioneers joined the BIG EAST in 2014. Denver enters Saturday's contest after a notable conference win on the road at Villanova, 12-10. The victory advanced the Pioneers to a 6-5 record and an even 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
Last week, Pios goaltender Jack Thompson was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for his stonewall performance between the pipes. The junior steered away 15 of the 25 shots the Wildcats had on goal.
Denver will honor its seniors prior to Saturday's BIG EAST tilt.
