St. John’s Set To Host Iona In Midweek Contest

First pitch from Red Storm Field is slated for 3 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 19, 2022) – The St. John's softball team will host Iona in a midweek contest on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Red Storm Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's dropped its BIG EAST weekend series with DePaul. The series finale, an 11-8 loss, was televised on CBS Sports Network and was called in the sixth inning due to travel related time constraints.
In the first half of Friday's twin bill, Natalie Alheidt went 1-for-2 at the plate as the junior sent a homer to center field, her second of the season. Hannah Mearns was tabbed with the loss despite fanning eight batters in her ninth complete game of the year.
In Saturday's contest, Natalie Casto and Anese Thompson both went 1-for-3 at the plate as the freshmen each tallied a home run. The homers marked Casto's first collegiate dinger and the third for Thompson.
London Jarrard went 2-for-4 as the Carlsbad, Calif., native recorded a three-RBI double, her 10th extra-base hit this year. Jarrard leads the Johnnies and is second in the BIG EAST with a .393 batting average, as of April 14.
Thompson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, on April 19, after she batted .375 (3-for-8) with a homer, an RBI and a stolen base and in the Red Storm's 1-3 week.
St. John's is undefeated (3-0) in midweek contests at Red Storm Field. The Red Storm picked up wins against Fairfield (4-3), Stony Brook (1-0) and LIU (4-1) so far this season. In the team's most recent triumph over the Sharks, St. John's was powered by a four-run first inning.
Camryn Steele went 2- 4 in the win with two RBIs while Jarrard and Amy Mallah each tallied an RBI single. Angela Saric recorded her first win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings. The senior allowed two hits and one run while fanning two batters. Carolina Zamudio was tabbed with the save with 1.2 innings of work as she faced the minimum and tallied four punchouts.
As of April 14, St. John's sits in third place in the BIG EAST for stolen bases. Connecticut leads with 93 stolen bases, while Butler follows with 43. The Red Storm follows closely with 40 stolen bags. Murray has stolen 17 bases on the year, good enough for fourth in the league.
The Gaels are 17-16 this season having most recently swept a doubleheader over Manhattan by a combined score of 12-4. Iona Head Coach Alyssa Tiumalu was a St. John's Assistant Coach from 2017-2021. Her sister, Kamryn Tiumalu, is an infielder on the St. John's squad. Iona returns NFCA All-Region Second Team member Jessica Chilcott and Third Team member Kara Zazzaro. Chilcott leads the Gaels with a .327 batting average and nine home runs while Zazzaro boasts a 9-7 record with a 2.36 ERA over 115.2 innings of work.
St. John's and Iona have met 25 times with the Johnnies dominating the series, 19-6. The Red Storm took the 8-2 victory the last time the two teams met at Red Storm Field in 2018.
