Connor Kalmus nets a career-high four goals in 22-9 loss
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team faltered against no. 19/19 Villanova, falling 22-9 on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats capitalized on the extra-man advantage four times in the first quarter and sustained their lead throughout to grab the conference opener on a windy day at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Connor Kalmus led the Johnnies with a career-high four goals on Saturday afternoon.
Jonathan Huber fired in a hat-trick to hit the historic 100 career-point mark. Dylan Willis and Caleb Zuhoski found their open teammates as they each contributed two helpers apiece.
Kaden Quirk tied his season-high with 17 stops in front of the home net. The freshman has logged 64 saves over his last four contests.
In the opening quarter, the Johnnies struck first when Huber tickled the twine on a feed from Willis. The Wildcats engineered a 7-0 run, where they scored four goals on the extra-man advantage. The Red Storm halted the visitors run when Matt Duncan lobbed one to a waiting Huber in front of the net for his second tally of the game.
With 1:14 remaining in the first period, Brian Kelly netted a highlight reel worthy goal when he fired a behind-the-head shot into the top corner past Villanova goaltender Will Vitton.
In the second frame, Villanova continued to pad its lead to take a 14-5 advantage into the break.
In the third period, the Johnnies were able to slow down the relentless Wildcats attack, as they allowed just two goals in the quarter. Kalmus added the final two of his four-straight goals in the third frame. After the ball was smacked free in front of the Villanova net, the junior midfielder scooped the groundball and shoveled it into the net, for his career-high fourth goal.
With under three minutes remaining in the game, Huber received a dish from Zuhoski ripped one from the point to complete his hat-trick. The attackman's third goal of the day etched him in the history books as just the 13th player in program history to reach the century mark for career points.
The Johnnies welcome another conference foe in on Saturday, April 9 when Marquette makes a visit to Queens. First face-off from DaSilva Memorial field is slated for noon.
