Six Johnnies tallied two or more RBIs in the win
Despite not starting, David Williams and Carlos Hidalgo paced the Red Storm offense with 3 RBIs apiece. Williams tallied all his RBIs on one swing, a three-run blast, his first of the season. Hidalgo went 3-for-3 with two run-scoring doubles and two runs scored.
Four other Johnnies recorded at least two RBIs as Jackson Tucker, David Glancy, Kevin Michaels and Paul Orbon each accounted for two runs. Orbon's two RBIs ties a career high while the remaining three hitters also scored two runs each to bolster the offensive effort for St. John's (13-24).
On the mound, Joe Mascio tossed five shutout innings, striking out five and allowing only four hits to pick up his third win of the season. The freshman left-hander now leads all pitchers with three individual wins and has yet to suffer a loss in 2022.
With today's win, the Johnnies improved their record against teams out of the Northeastern Conference to 5-0 after sweeping a three-game set with Sacred Heart and defeating Wagner within a five-day span in March.
After two scoreless innings to start, St. John's broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third to take the early 1-0 lead. Colin Wetterau led off the frame with a double to the gap in left center before Chris Conniff moved him over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Tucker lifted a fly ball to center to send Wetterau home and give the Red Storm the initial advantage.
The Johnnies offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs to blow the game open, 9-0. Orbon singled to left before back-to-back walks by Wetterau and Conniff loaded the bases. Tucker and Glancy each tallied an RBI courtesy of a hit-by-pitch to lead 3-0. Tate Ballestero drew an RBI walk to expand the edge to 4-0. A Michaels base hit to center gave the Red Storm a five-run lead before back-to-back two-RBI doubles by Hidalgo and Orbon, respectively, capped off the frame.
The onslaught was not finished as the Johnnies added five more runs in the home half of the sixth to widen the gap even further, 14-0. After Tucker reached third base on a single and a Fairleigh Dickinson (18-18) throwing error that sailed into the visiting dugout, Glancy singled up the middle to send the freshman outfielder home and give the Red Storm a double-digit lead. Michaels doubled to right center to plate Glancy. With two runners on, Williams launched a three-run homer to left to provide the 14-run edge for the home side.
An RBI double and a run-scoring groundout got the Knights on the board in the top of the seventh, 14-2, but the Johnnies responded with another tally in the eighth when Hidalgo roped a ground-rule double down the left-field line to give St. John's its 15th run of the contest, tied for a season high.
Tim Cunningham closed out the decisive victory with a quick, scoreless ninth inning to snap the three-game skid.
Next up, St. John's will continue an eight-game homestand when it hosts BIG EAST foe Butler in a three-game weekend series. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
