Johnnies finish season with an 18-6 record
CAYCE S.C.- After a marathon BIG EAST semifinal match that lasted over three hours and 30 minutes, the top-seeded St. John's women's tennis team ultimately fell to fourth-seeded DePaul, 4-2.
The top-seeded Johnnies came up short after falling behind in doubles play. The Blue Demons then went on to take three of the five completed singles matches to punch their ticket to the BIG EAST Championship tilt against Xavier.
In doubles play Mouna Bouzgarrou and Emilie Haakansson took the first match win, cruising past Marija Jovicic and Hristina Djokic, 6-1. The Blue Demons answered, taking both remaining doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Jayden Nielsen put up the first singles point for the Red Storm, winning her match against Lenka Antonijevic in a straight-set take down, 6-1, 6-0. The redshirt junior finished the spring campaign with an 18-1 record in dual-matches.
Willa Bay Breunich corralled a singles win, 7-5, 6-0, against the Blue Demons Madelyn Yergler in the no. 5 spot. Lalita Devarakonda went head-to-head with Jovicic once more, falling in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
After Bouzgarrou dropped her match on the no. 1 court to Yuliya Kizelbasheva, 6-1, 6-4. DePaul held a 3-2 lead with a pair of matches remaining headed into the third set.
On the no. 4 court, Yesica de Lucas and Eleanor Nobbs traded the first two sets. In the deciding set, the two continued to battle before Nobbs won three straight games to take a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory and send the Blue Demons into the title match.
Haakansson went back-and-forth in her battle with Martin in the no. 6 spot. The Johnnies senior jumped ahead a set, 6-3, before falling in the second, 3-6. The match ultimately went unfinished after Nobbs outlasted de Lucas to clinch.
St. John's will conclude its season tied for the all-time program-record with 18 wins and an undefeated 14-0 record on its home court.
