Paul Orbon and Nick Cirelli each hit a home run in the midweek win
Paul Orbon and Nick Cirelli each hit a home run in the midweek victory. Orbon hit a solo shot in the second while Cirelli capped off the frame with a three-run bomb over the home bullpen in right field. Orbon finished the afternoon going 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and Cirelli went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
Tate Ballestero enjoyed a solid day at the dish, tallying two hits in three at-bats with a double, a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week David Glancy went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
All nine starters reached base at least once in the resounding win over the Gaels.
On the mound, Geoff Mosseau was credited with the win for St. John's (16-24-1), his second consecutive victory against Iona after earning the victory in the previous matchup on March 11, 2020.
Mosseau was a part of six consecutive scoreless innings tossed by Red Storm pitching to close out the contest.
Iona grabbed the first lead of the ballgame in the top of the first courtesy of solo home run by Will Jennings to give the Gaels the early 1-0 edge.
Iona added another tally in the top of the second to double its advantage, 2-0. Back-to-back doubles by Luca Lotito and Phoenix Bowman pushed across another run for the visitors.
The Johnnies would respond with authority in the home half of the second, erupting for six runs to jump out in front, 6-2. Orbon got the rally started with a solo shot over the left-field wall for the Johnnies' first run of the afternoon. After a two-out single and a hit-by-pitch, Glancy tied the game at two with a base hit to left center. Ballestero followed up with a bloop double to left to put the Red Storm ahead, 3-2. Cirelli capped off the inning with a three-run moonshot to right to blow the game open.
Iona cut the Johnnies' lead to three in the top of the third when Jake Field roped an RBI triple to left to bring the score to 6-3.
The Red Storm quickly restored its four-run advantage, 7-3, in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and third, Jackson Tucker deposited a single down the right-field line to score the eighth tally of the game for the home team.
St. John's would add one more unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, giving the bullpen plenty of breathing room to close out the 8-3 victory.
The Red Storm will hit the road and face off with BIG EAST foe Villanova in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. First pitch from Villanova Ballpark on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
