St. John’s Drops Series Opener to Villanova, 5-1

Seven Johnnies reached base at least once on Friday afternoon
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.- The St. John's baseball team fell to Villanova, 5-1, at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Friday afternoon.
Paul Orbon tallied the lone RBI of the contest for the Red Storm with a 1-for-4 performance. Carlos Hidalgo went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored while Kevin Michaels notched a base hit after a one-game absence.
Joe Joe Rodriguez threw 6.0 innings, striking out three while allowing three earned runs but suffered the loss for St. John's (16-25-1, 2-7-1 BIG EAST).
After a scoreless first inning, the Johnnies opened the scoring, scratching one run across to grab an early 1-0 lead. Hidalgo drew a one-out walk before stealing second. Orbon cashed in with an RBI single to send Hidalgo home and give the Red Storm a one-run edge.
Villanova flipped the script in the bottom of the third, pushing three runs across to jump in front, 3-1. Three balls in play, two singles and an RBI fielder's choice, provided the three tallies in the frame and gave the home team the lead.
The Wildcats added another tally in the bottom of the fourth to expand the advantage to three runs, 4-1. With runners on first and second, Joey Castellanos notched his third base hit of the afternoon to give Villanova a three-run lead after four innings.
After both sides put up a zero in the fifth, Villanova tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 5-1. Chris Rotondo reached on a fielder's choice to the third baseman before reaching third on a stolen base and an error. Pat O'Neill grounded out to the pitcher to send Rotondo home and tally the fifth and final run of the afternoon for the hosts.
The Wildcats used three scoreless innings from left-handed reliever Danny Wilkinson to close out the contest and secure the series-opening victory.
St. John's and Villanova will resume the three-game set tomorrow. First pitch from Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth is set for 1 p.m.
