St. John’s Prepares for Split-Team Weekend Action

The Red Storm will compete at Icahn Stadium and in Coral Gables, Fla.
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will split up and take part in the Metropolitan Championships at Icahn Stadium and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. Both meets will get underway on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
Leah Anderson will headline the group traveling to the Sunshine State for the second time during the outdoor campaign. In her last trip to the campus of the University of Miami, Anderson took home first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.07 and was a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished in second.
Skyy Diop secured two top-10 finishes in her last appearance in Coral Gables, Fla., in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes, respectively. The senior out of Ontario has not finished outside of the top-10 in any event she has participated in the 2021-22 track season.
Tatyana McKenzie, Brooklyn Chestnut and Onassha Rogers round out the sprinters making the trip to the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Chestnut and Rogers will compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes while McKenzie will participate in the 200 and 400-meter races. Anderson, Diop, Chestnut and McKenzie will look for their second win in a row as a team in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays after taking first in both events at the Sam Howell Invitational last week.
At the Metropolitan Championships, Zamira Ysaac is poised to secure her third win of the season, and second victory in a row, in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a time of 1:05.16 at the Sam Howell Invitational. Ysaac will also compete in the 100-meter hurdles for the fourth time this outdoor season, most recently capturing third in Princeton, N.J., last week.
Claire Cushing, Katherine Bruno and Gabriella Caronia will lead the way in the distance category at Icahn Stadium. Bruno will compete for the first time since the Rutgers Open on Feb. 11 when she participates in the 800-meter run. Cushing will join Bruno in the 800-meters, looking to build on a second-place finish in the event at the Penn Challenge to open the season. Caronia will take part in the 1,500-meter run for the second time this outdoor season after recording a time of 5:17.27 at the Penn Challenge on March 19.
In the throwing events, Esmeralda Reyes will battle for her second win in as many meets in the javelin throw. Reyes grabbed first place at the Sam Howell Invitational with a winning toss of 40.00 meters. Lasma Padedze is coming off an impressive showing last week in Princeton, finishing second in both the discus and shot put throws.
