QUEENS, N.Y. (April 8, 2022) – The St. John's softball team fell to Butler, 10-1, in the first contest of a three-game BIGEAST series on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
Butler's Karli Ricketts earned the win after pitching 4.0 innings of scoreless work and fanning eight batters. Mackenzie Griman pitched 1.0 innings in relief and gave up the lone run to the Johnnies (8-26, 3-10 BIG EAST).
Carolina Zamudio picked up the loss, dropping the rookie to 3-11 this season. The Mexico City native allowed four runs on four hits and walked a pair. Angela Saric pitched 4.0 innings in relief for the Red Storm and allowed six runs on eight hits while walking six batters.
London Jarrard went 1-for-1 at the plate while Natalie Alheidt posted the other hit for the Red Storm. Anna Freveletti recorded the lone RBI for the Johnnies in the loss.
Zamudio got the start in the circle, but the rookie hit trouble early when Butler (19-13, 8-4 BIG EAST) loaded the bases before the Johnnie defense could record an out. Despite striking out the Bulldog's cleanup hitter Monique Hoosen, back-to-back singles for Butler left the Red Storm behind 3-0. After a popout sent another Butler batter back to the dugout, an RBI single for Bri Avery extended the Bulldog lead, 4-0.
Jarrard looked to rally in the home half of the inning when she recorded a two-out single, but the freshman was caught stealing to end the frame.
After a scoreless second inning on both sides, Saric allowed three runs in the top of the third before giving up one more in the fourth. The Bulldogs hung up another four-spot on the Johnnies in the bottom of the fifth, extending their 10-0 advantage.
Griman came out of the bullpen in the fifth and immediately walked Natalie Casto to start the inning. Kaitlyn Lologo reached on a fielder's choice and Casto advanced to third on an error by the shortstop. With runners on the corners, Freveletti sent a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Casto home and cutting the Bulldogs lead to nine.
Down to the team's final out, Alheidt sent a single to right field to put runners on the corners once more. However, Griman stuck out Meisha Murray for the final out of the game, sealing the 10-1 loss for St. John's.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday when it takes on the Bulldogs at 12 p.m. The contest will be streamed on ESPN3.
