Red Storm travels to Connecticut to compete for a conference title
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will travel to Storrs, Conn., to battle against the best in the conference at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The meet is set to begin on Friday with the throwing events at 10:00 a.m. and conclude on Saturday with 4x400-meter finals at 3:15 p.m. with an awards ceremony to follow.
Leah Anderson will look to become the first BIG EAST track athlete to three-peat in the women's 200-meter dash since UConn's Trisha-Ann Hawthorn won four consecutive conference titles in the event from 2008-2011. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native will go for a three-peat in the 400-meter dash, joining St. John's track and field legend Youree Spence as the only other athlete to win the event three times.
The St. John's 4x100 relay is also poised to repeat after posting a winning time of 45.64 at the 2021 conference championships.
Claire Cushing will lead the way for the distance runners, competing the 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs. In 2021, Cushing finished 12th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:44.92.
In the field events, senior Amanda Belgrave is poised to compete for a conference in the long jump and the triple jump. Meghan Ladd will lead the way for the pole vaulters while Esmeralda Reyes will look for another win this outdoor season in the javelin throw. Senior Lasma Padedze will look to capture a victory in the shot put in her final collegiate meet.
