St. John’s Travels to Staten Island to Face Wagner

Red Storm to wrap up non-conference schedule against the Seahawks
After winning a pivotal series against the Georgetown Hoyas over the weekend, the St. John's baseball team will end the regular season with a four-game road trip, starting with a short drive to Staten Island to take on Wagner on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch from SIUH Community Park is set for 3:30 p.m.
The final midweek matchup of 2022 will be live streamed on NEC Front Row, and live stats will be available on WagnerAthletics.com.
The Johnnies have dominated the Northeastern Conference, owning a 5-1 record against NEC opponents with an average run margin of 8.6 in the five wins.
Joe Mascio will make his sixth start of the season on Tuesday. The freshman southpaw has not allowed more than two earned runs in an outing since April 9 and leads the Red Storm with four wins.
Kevin Michaels hit .533 (8-for-15) in the series against Georgetown with three RBIs and six runs scored. Michaels' most important RBI of the weekend came on Sunday when he hit a game-tying solo home run on a two-strike pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The redshirt sophomore now leads the Red Storm with a .341 average and paces the Johnnies in RBIs with 45. The Encinitas, Calif., native's seventh homer of 2022 moved him into second place on the roster in the long ball department and the team lead in extra-base hits with 22.
A consistent bat for the Johnnies, Tate Ballestero is batting .335 with a team-leading on-base percentage of .420. The redshirt sophomore paces the Red Storm with 66 base hits and 20 games with two or more base knocks. Ballestero has also shown the ability to hit for power, tallying 12 doubles, three triples and three home runs this season. The Morristown, N.J., native is one of two position players to start all 51 games this season.
Chuck Sanzio logged two scoreless relief appearances against Georgetown to pick up his second BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod of the season. The sophomore righthander tossed 1.1 shutout frames on Saturday before earning his second win of the season on Sunday with a career-high seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
A solid all-around talent, Jackson Tucker is slashing .267/.390/.733 in 47 games this season. The freshman outfielder flashed some leather over the weekend, making a spectacular diving catch in the ninth inning to help the Red Storm defeat Georgetown, 11-8, on Saturday. The Staten Island native has showcased his speed on the basepaths this season, stealing 15 bases in 18 attempts.
Paul Orbon showed a flair for the dramatic last weekend, delivering the walk-off single to give the Johnnies the 10-9 win over Georgetown in 11 innings on Sunday. The redshirt sophomore is hitting at a .297 clip in 18 starts and boasts an on-base percentage of .410.
The team's leading hitter in conference play, Chris Conniff is batting .340 in 16 BIG EAST games with a home run, a double and 10 RBIs. The sophomore set a new career high with three RBIs in Saturday's victory over Georgetown.
Wagner enters Tuesday's game with a record of 15-32 and a mark of 9-8 in home games.
Maimu Kobayashi leads the Seahawks at the plate, batting .305 with two home runs, seven doubles and 16 RBIs. Dante Faicchio is Wagner's leading run producer, tallying 48 RBIs with 11 home runs and 15 doubles in 47 starts.
On the mound, Eli Shedd owns a team-best 2.88 ERA in seven appearances for Wagner. Shedd is one of seven Seahawks with at least one save and has struck out 22 batters in 25.0 innings of work.
