David Glancy hit his 11th home run of the season
David Glancy slugged his 11th home run of the season, tied for 10th in program history for home runs in a single season. Glancy went 3-for-4 on Friday with two RBIs and a run scored.
Tate Ballestero hit two doubles against the Musketeers, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Kevin Michaels tallied the other RBI on the afternoon while Jackson Tucker extended his on-base streak to 17 games, chipping in a hit and a run scored.
St. John's (22-31-1, 7-11-1 BIG EAST) scored right away in the top of the first, pushing one run across to lead, 1-0. Tucker and Glancy each singled to lead off the frame before advancing into scoring position on a productive groundout by Ballestero. Michaels brought in the first run of the afternoon with an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
Xavier (30-25, 12-8 BIG EAST) quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 3-1 lead. With runners on first and second, Grant Stephenson hit a ground-rule double to tie the game at one and put two Musketeers in scoring position with nobody out. After scoring another run on a wild pitch, Jerry Huntzinger singled to left to give Xavier a two-run edge after two frames.
A two-run bomb by Glancy quickly tied the score at three in the top of the third. Glancy's round tripper marked the third game-tying homer for the redshirt sophomore this season.
An RBI groundout and a run-scoring single restored the Musketeers' multi-run advantage, 5-3, in the home half of the third.
After a scoreless fourth, Xavier tacked on two more runs in the fifth to widen the gap to 7-3. Grant Stephenson tallied his second RBI of the contest on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before Jared Cushing lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give the home side a four-run lead.
Xavier added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh when Cushing launched a two-run shot to left to expand the lead, 9-3.
Musketeer pitching kept the Red Storm hitters at bay over the final two innings to seal the series victory.
St. John's and Xavier will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Hayden Field is set for noon.
