St. John’s Heads To Iona For Final Road Contest

QUEENS, N.Y. (May 3, 2022) – The St. John's softball team will travel to Iona on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. contest. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with live stats available on ICGaels.com.
The Red Storm will look to split the season series as it fell, 5-3, on April 20. During the game, London Jarrard went 1-for-3 at the plate as the freshman nailed a two-run homer. The blast marked Jarrard's first collegiate home run. Amy Mallah went 2-for- 3 as the East Meadow, N.Y., native tallied her second homer of the year.
Carolina Zamudio pitched a 7.0 inning complete game as the freshman allowed four hits, two earned runs and tallied seven punchouts for the Red Storm.
St. John's posted a 2-0 shutout at Georgetown on Friday before falling by a combined score of 8-4 on Saturday and Sunday.
Hannah Mearns pitched two complete games on the weekend and allowed just three hits while tallying five punchouts in Friday's shutout. On Sunday, the sophomore tallied five strikeouts as she retired 17-straight batters to close the game. In the victory, Jarrard went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the freshman tallied her 11th double of the season. Meisha Murray extended her hitting streak to four games as the senior went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. In the series finale, Melanie Santos went 2-for-2 at the plate, as the sophomore recorded her first collegiate home run in the fifth inning.
The Gaels are 21-21 this season having most recently swept a doubleheader over Quinnipiac by a combined score of 7-1. Iona Head Coach Alyssa Tiumalu was a St. John's Assistant Coach from 2017-2021. Her sister, Kamryn Tiumalu, is an infielder on the St. John's squad.
Iona returns NFCA All-Region Second Team member Jessica Chilcott and Third Team member Kara Zazzaro. Chilcott leads the Gaels with a .316 batting average and nine home runs while Zazzaro boasts an 11-9 record with a 2.17 ERA over 145.1 innings of work.
St. John's and Iona have met 26 times with the Johnnies dominating the series, 19-7.
