St. John’s sophomore wins first tournament of the season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – St. John's sophomore Peicheng Chen earned medalist honors at The MacDonald Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The sophomore tallied his first win of the season as he recorded a 9-under par 201 during the 54-hole event at the Yale Golf Course. The Beijing native finished four strokes ahead of the runner-up, Will Lodge of Yale.
"Chen was incredible yesterday with 14 birdies in 36 holes during difficult windy conditions," head coach Phil Wildermuth said. "He played pretty steadily today and that was all he needed to do to win. He's in a really good place right now. He loves St John's, and he loves his teammates. Everyone is so happy for him."
As a team, the Johnnies came in sixth place, shooting 1,074 at the event. Minnesota took home the team title as the Gopher squad finished at 2-over par (1,052)
Jack Simon tied for 22nd place as the Sparta, N.J. native signed off on a 2-under 68 in the final round. Simon posted a 214 for the two-day event. Ryan Rittberger carded a 221 to tie for 43rd place. Finishing a stroke behind the senior was Brendan Smith as the Monmouth transfer recorded a 222 at the 54-hole event.
Gage Wolfle and Tyler Gerbavsits rounded out the Johnnies lineup, each carding a 225 for the tournament. Gerbavsits tallied four birdies during the final round.
St. John's returns to action with the UConn Invitational at Greathorse from Oct. 2-4.
