St. John’s Enjoys Successful Day at MLK Tribute Meet

Red Storm collected nine wins on Monday afternoon
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team dominated at the MLK Tribute Meet at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Monday, piling up nine wins across 16 events.
Tatyana McKenzie grabbed a first-place finish for the second-straight meet, winning the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.64. Three newcomers, Delicia Bent, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji and Tea Siehou, grabbed the next three spots in an overwhelming performance for the Red Storm sprint team. Zamira Ysaac earned her first victory of the season in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line at 9.56. Brooklyn Chestnut found the winners' circle in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.36. Nora Haugen and Chinenye Onuorah continued their strong indoor campaigns with a second and third-place results, respectively, in the 200-meter race.
In the distance events, Claire Cushing set a new personal best in the mile run with a time of 5:04.47, winning the race in the process. In her indoor season debut, Ezgi Yasar finished second in the mile with a mark of 5:23.45. Freshman Leilani Robinson secured her first individual win of the campaign in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.40. The 4x800-meter relay team captured its second win of 2022-23 as the quartet Jenna D'Onofrio, Ana Markovina, Tiffany-Ann Matturro and Yasar posted a victorious time of 10:00.97.
In the pole vault, Berit Friedenbach set the new indoor program record, clearing the 3.45-meter bar to take first place. Friedenbach's mark surpasses teammate Meghan Ladd's 3.35-meter effort on Feb. 4, 2022. Elsewhere on the track, Lemus-Sodji continued her excellent day with a win in the long jump, leaping a distance of 5.60 meters. Samantha Morillo-Martinez grabbed her first win of the indoor slate in the shot put throw with a heave of 13.55 meters.
The Red Storm will return to Ocean Breeze on Saturday when it takes part in the Villanova Invite.
