Red Storm will take on local foe for the first in 13 years
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when it faces Manhattan in Queens.
The Red Storm and Jaspers will tip at 2 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena with Johnny Gadamowitz and Ralph Bednarczyk on the call on FloSports.
The Red Storm will look to get back in the win column after dropping contests to Monmouth and Penn State.
In their last contest, the Johnnies strung together a stout defensive performance to lead at the break 26-23 but were outlasted in the latter half and fell to the Lady Lions, 69-53.
Unique Drake continues to led the Johnnies in the scoring category. The guard has reached double-figures in all three games and is currently averaging 20.7 points per game, which ranks second in the BIG EAST.
Ber'Nyah Mayo led all scorers on Thursday night pouring in a game-high 16 points. During her best scoring performance on the young season the UMass transfer eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark, joining Amber Brown as the second Red Storm player to achieve that feat this season.
Jillian Archer logged her second double-double of the year against Penn State. The graduate student posted 11 points and 10 rebounds. The forward is currently averaging 13.5 points per game and 10.0 boards per contest.
St. John's have been strong from the charity stripe this season shooting 82.1 percent (32-39) from the free-throw line. Mayo matched a career-high with six makes from the line on as many attempts on Thursday.
Sunday's matinee marks the first time in 13 years the two New York City schools will meet on the hardwood. The Red Storm have won all 12 meetings in the series dating back to 1980 and have won six of those contests in Queens. During the last matchup, the Red Storm defeated the Jaspers, 77-51, on Nov. 16, 2010 at Carnesecca Arena. Former Johnnies standout and current Assistant Coach Shenneika Smith led all scorers with 18 points in that contest.
Manhattan comes into the game with a 2-1 record on the year after an impressive win against another local school Fordham on Thursday night. The Jaspers defense has been suffocating during the early-going of the 2023-24 campaign, as they have yet to allow more than 55 points through three games. Manhattan ranks 13th in NCAA Division I in scoring defense allowing just 44.7 points per game.
Following Sunday's contest, St. John's will venture to San Juan, P.R. to play three games in three days at the Discover Puerto Rico Classic over Thanksgiving break.
