Red Storm to host “Pink Game” in honor of all those who fight against breast cancer
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will ready for a marquee matchup on Wednesday night, when it welcomes No. 14/15 Villanova to Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm will host its annual "Pink Game", where players and coaches will be wearing the color in honor of all of those who have or are fighting breast cancer.
The contest is slated to start at 7 p.m. and will air on MSG Network with John Fanta and Kim Adams on the call. For channel listings for the regional sports network, visit their website. Additionally, the game will be streamed on FloHoops.
In its last game, St. John's completed its first-ever season sweep of DePaul in program history, with a 77-61 victory in Carnesecca Arena. The win lifted the Red Storm to its 10th conference victory, for the first time since 2019-20.
In an efficient offensive effort, five Red Storm players scored in double-figures for the first time this season. For the third time this season, the Johnnies shot 50 percent from beyond-the-arc (9-for-18) in the win.
On the defensive end, the Blue Demons were forced to shoot just 2-for-26 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range and blocked a season-high nine shots as a team. Rayven Peeples led the way tying a career-high with five blocks against DePaul. The forward tied for the team-high in rebounds (11) with Jillian Archer, who finished with her fifth double-double of the year (10 points and 11 rebounds).
Jayla Everett was terrific in Saturday's home win matching a season-high with 26 points. The shooting guard drilled 5-of-7 attempts from 3-point land and shot 9-for-15 from field goal range. She also dished out a game-high four assists.
The redshirt senior garnered recognition for her efforts landing sports on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and the All-MET Honorable Mention list. Her prolific scoring performance slid her back into the top-5 in the league in scoring registering 16.8 points per game.
The Red Storm have been reliable for the charity stripe as of late. Over the last five games the team has shot 56-for-68 (82.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
Villanova heads to Queens having won 12 of its last 13 games and checked in at No. 14 in the most recent edition of the Associated Press.
The nation's leading scorer, Maddy Siegrist continued to shatter records o Saturday, as she broke the BIG EAST Conference scoring record and the single-game school record with an impeccable 50-point point performance in a 99-65 drubbing of Seton Hall. The forward's 50 points on 20-of-26 shooting was the highest point total by any player in a game men's or women's in NCAA Division I this season. The Poughkeepsie, N.Y., native is logging 29.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game on the season.
The first time these two squads met at Finneran Pavilion on Jan. 14, the Johnnies held the lead for 36:12 of the game and led by as many as 16, but a late Wildcats surge in the final five minutes gave No. 25 Villanova a 64-61 win. Everett led the team with 18 points and Peeples recorded a double-double (11 points and 11 rebounds) in the narrow setback.
Wednesday's meeting marks the 78th all-time meeting between the two longtime BIG EAST member institutions. Villanova leads the series 49-28.
