Men’s Tennis Set for Date Against No. 46 Penn State

The Red Storm are riding a seven-match winning streak
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team will travel to State College, Penn. for a Wednesday match against No. 46 Penn State at Sarni Tennis Center.
Sergio Molina was named the BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The Mexicali, Mexico native won both of his matches last week to improve to 8-0 on the season. A Johnnie has been honored by the BIG EAST in all four weeks this season.
Last week the Red Storm won a pair of matches against Hofstra and Boston University. St. John's knocked off Hofstra in a road midweek match, 6-0. The Red Storm closed the weekend with a 5-2 win against Boston U. at the USTA Tennis Center.
Molina tops the Johnnies in singles wins at 8-0. Freshman Nishant Dabas has accumulated the second-most wins touting a 7-1 record on the season. Carl Gustafsson (6-1) and Ryota Kaneda (6-0) also lead the Red Storm in singles play.
In doubles play, the duo of Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda lead the Red Storm in victories at 5-1. Carl Gustafsson and Anton Stendal's 4-1 record is the second best. The Johnnies 14-man roster has produced 13 different duos this season.
No. 46 Penn State enters the match 9-1 on the season as well. The Nittany Lions notched a pair of victories against Princeton and William & Mary last weekend. PSU edged the Tigers 4-3, before sweeping W&M.
Junior Miko Eala leads the squad with a 9-1 singles record. The Nittany Lions also have a pair of duos at a perfect 8-0 this season, Lorem Byars and Sam Bossem and Charl Morgan and Malik Bhatnagar.
The Nittany Lions own the series lead 3-2 with the Red Storm. The two programs last met in 2014 in State College, in which Penn State swept St. John's. 7-0.
St. John's will close the weekend at Old Dominion on Sunday. Doubles play is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., and the match will be held at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
