Red Storm and Pride to meet for 14th straight season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team will open up the home portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon when it welcomes the Hofstra Pride to Queens. The first face-off from DaSilva Memorial Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The matchup will be streamed on ESPN3, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Last Saturday, the Johnnies clashed with a nationally ranked opponent for the first time this season, falling to the No. 13/14 Delaware Blue Hens, 16-7, in Newark, Del.
Brian Kelly and Sean Duffy each registered a hat-trick, marking the first time this season two players have scored three or more goals in a game. Kelly tallied all three of his scores in the first 30 minutes of play, joining fellow attackman Connor Kalmus as the second player to accomplish the feat in 2023. Kelly now sits one point shy of 50 career points; should he tally a point on Saturday, Kelly would tie program legend Kieran McArdle for fewest games to 50 career points (17 games) in program history. For his efforts, Kelly was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time this season on Monday.
Duffy logged a point for the 32nd time in 33 appearances dating back to his time with Hampden-Sydney. The Horsham, Pa., native ranks second on the squad in shots on goal with eight and is tied with Kalmus for second in points with three.
Two newcomers have made an immediate impact in their first two games with the Red Storm. Maryland transfer Jack Schirtzer leads the nation in caused turnovers, generating 4.5 takeaways per game. Drexel transfer Kyle Munson has started both games in goal and has logged double-digit saves in both outings, most recently setting a new career-high with 15 saves against Delaware.
Saturday's game will mark the 14th consecutive meeting and 25th overall between St. John's and Hofstra. The Pride leads the series, 18-6, but the two teams have split the last two matchups. In 2022, Hofstra outlasted the Red Storm, 12-6, in Hempstead, N.Y. The year prior, the Johnnies opened up the 2021 season with a thrilling 19-18 overtime win over the Pride.
Hofstra enters this weekend's contest with a record of 1-3, picking up its first win of the season over LIU on Tuesday. The Pride was picked to finish fifth in the Preseason CAA Coaches Poll.
Offensively, the Pride touts three double-digit point scorers, led by sophomore attackman Gerard Kane who has 17 points on nine goals and eight assists this season. John Madsen and Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention Rory Jones are tied for second on the squad with 10 points each.
Fellow conference honorable mention Mac Gates has started all four games between the pipes for the Pride, racking up 44 saves and owning a save percentage of .518 this season.
After the home opener, the Red Storm will hit the road for its first midweek tilt of 2023 when it travels to New Jersey for a date with Rutgers on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m.
The matchup will be streamed on ESPN3, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
