Men's Tennis Travels to Old Dominion for Sunday Morning Match

The Red Storm are 9-2 on the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team will travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion on Sunday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in the second match of its three-match road trip.
Sergio Molina was named the BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The Mexicali, Mexico native won both of his matches last week to improve to 8-0 on the season. A Johnnie has been honored by the BIG EAST in all four weeks this season.
Last week the Red Storm won a pair of matches against Hofstra and Boston University. St. John's knocked off Hofstra in a road midweek match, 6-0. The Red Storm closed the weekend with a 5-2 win against Boston U. at the USTA Tennis Center. On Wednesday, the Johnnies fell 5-2 at No. 46 Penn State, for just their second loss of the season.
Two Johnnies are tied for the team-lead with eight wins. Molina dropped his first match of the season against the Nittany Lions, to become 8-1. Freshman Nishant Dabas earned his eighth win against No. 46 Penn State, to also improve to 8-1. Carl Gustafsson (6-2) and Ryota Kaneda (6-1) also lead the Red Storm in singles play.
In doubles play, the duo of Adam Groves and Kaneda leads the Red Storm in victories at 5-2. Gustafsson and Anton Stendal's 4-1 record is the second best. The Johnnies 14-man roster has produced 15 different duos this season.
Old Dominion touts a 7-4 overall record heading into the weekend. The Monarchs are coming off its most recent victory, a 6-1 win against Charlotte on Thursday. Last weekend ODU split a pair of matches with a loss to VCU before winning the second match of the weekend against William & Mary.
Codie van Schalkwyk's seven singles wins is the most for the Monarchs. He is 7-3 on the season, and has won his last two matches. The duo of Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Francois Le Tallec has notched a perfect 4-0 record in the first 11 matches of the season.
Old Dominion has won all three previous meetings against the Red Storm. The most recent match, was a 4-3 victory for the Monarchs. The last time the two squads met in Norfolk, Va. was resulted in a 4-0 sweep for ODU on March 4, 2017.
St. John's will conclude its three-match road trip with a midweek contest against Ole Miss on Thursday. Doubles play will start at 2 p.m.
