Men’s Tennis Falls at No. 16 Old Dominion, 5-2

The Red Storm conclude its three-match road trip on Thursday at Ole Miss
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team fell 5-2 at No. 16 Old Dominion on Sunday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in the second match of its three-match road trip.
The Red Storm started out strong taking two of the three tight doubles contests, to win the first point of the match. The duo of Diogo Marquez and Giuseppe De Camelis were victorious 7-6 (7-4) in the No. 1 slot against Jakob Cadonau and Brandon Perez. At the No. 2 spot, Carl Gustafsson and Nishant Dabas were victorious against Younes Lalani and Luca Maldoner, 7-6 (8-6).
In singles play, Dabas earned his team-best ninth victory of the season. The New Delhi, India native knocked off Perez, 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. In the last match to finish, Adam Groves forced three sets against Cadonau before ultimately falling, 7-6(7-3), 4-6, 8-10. ODU was able to win the other four matches in straight sets. Gustafsson fell in No.1 singles, 6-4, 6-4 to Lalani, in the Monarchs top spot. Filipe Grebentsov fought hard in the first set 7-6, before ultimately dropping the match to Nicola Vidal, 6-1 in the second set. After dropping the first set, 6-1 Ryota Kaneda didn't go down without a fight, falling to Maldoner 7-6 in the second set.
St. John's will conclude its three-match road trip with a midweek contest against Ole Miss on Thursday. Doubles play will start at 2 p.m.
