St. John’s Drops Georgetown, 61-53, on Senior Night

Red Storm clinch a bye in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. — The St. John's women's basketball team defeated Georgetown on Friday night, 61-53.
With the Red Storm win and a Seton Hall loss on Friday night, St. John's has clinched a first round bye in next week's BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.
The Red Storm finished out the 2022-23 regular season with a 14-2 record at Carnesecca Arena.
Prior to the game- Kadaja Bailey, Danielle Cosgrove, Jayla Everett, Danielle Patterson, Rayven Peeples and Mimi Reid were honored on the court in a special Senior Night presentation.
Everett utilized a strong second half to finish tying for a game-high 17 points. The shooting guard made three 3-pointer's which gives her 67 on the year, the most by a Red Storm player in a single-season since Kelly McManmon in 2009-10.
Bailey recorded a stellar night in Queens, finishing with 15 points and tied a season-high nine rebounds. The redshirt senior went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
The Johnnies' defense proved stifling holding the Hoyas' to 37.3 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range.
In the opening quarter, the two sides traded blows. The Red Storm began to build its advantage that in never relinquished in the closing minutes of the first with a 5-0 run capped off by a Danielle Patterson triple to make it 14-10. The forward finished with eight points.
In the following quarter, Mimi Reid flushed a 3-pointer midway through. In the final two minutes of the half, a Danielle Cosgrove 3-pointer and a fastbreak lay-in from Everett propelled the Red Storm to a 30-22 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, the team's two leading scorers, Bailey and Everett, combined for 13 of the team's 18 points. The Johnnies gained their largest lead of the game after Peeples finished around the basket off of a sweet dish from Bailey.
Georgetown (13-16, 6-14 BIG EAST) started off the final frame with a 5-0 spurt before Everett responded with a mid-range jumper, the first of seven-straight points the redshirt senior poured in for St. John's.
In the final five minutes, the Red Storm fended off the Hoyas to earn its 12th conference win of the year, the most the program has had since the 2013-14 season.
The Red Storm will hit the road once again for the third time in four games for its regular season finale Monday night at Providence.
