Red Storm finished fifth as a team
CHICAGO- The St. John's track and field team wrapped up its second day of competition at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm tallied four individual podium finishers and one relay medal, racking up 83 points as a team to finish fifth. Connecticut took home both the men's and women's titles.
Tatyana McKenzie led the way for the Red & White, racking up 20 individual points and being named BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer and the High Point Performer. This marks the third straight indoor season that a Johnnie has won both awards, joining Leah Anderson who accomplished the feat in 2022 and 2020.
On Saturday, McKenzie won the 200-meter final with an impressive time of 23.68 and followed up with a personal-best mark of 55.14 in the 400-meter dash, good for second place. The graduate student out of Kingston, Jamaica was instrumental in the 4x400-meter relay team's second-place finish to round out a dominant performance at the conference championships.
In the shot put, freshman Jamora Alves took home the gold with a winning toss of 14.02 meters, and Samantha Morillo-Martinez captured third with a heave of 13.30 meters. Alves' win is the first by a St. John's athlete in the shot put since Amarys Berry in 2019.
Brooklyn Chestnut enjoyed a solid afternoon at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track and Field Center, posting a 60-meter time of 7.57 to reach the podium for the second-straight season.
The quartet of Quitterie Dujardin, Nora Haugen, McKenzie and Chinenye Onuorah captured the fifth medal of the day for the Red Storm in the 4x400-meter relay with a solid mark of 3:45.11.
St. John's will return to action on Sunday, March 5 with it travels to Boston to compete in the ECAC Championships.
