The Red Storm will face an ITA Top 75 Team for the third straight match
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 1, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team travels to Oxford, Miss. to take on No. 73 Ole Miss on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The match will be streamed through Ole Miss Sports, and live stats can be found on StatBroadcast.
The Johnnies ran into a gauntlet last week with clashes against a pair of top-75 teams. On Wednesday, the Johnnies fell 5-2 at No. 46 Penn State. Nishant Dabas and Adam Groves each earned a win in singles play against the Nittany Lions. On Sunday, the squad was back in action and fell 5-2 to No. 62 Old Dominion. The Red Storm won two of the three doubles matches, and Dabas also earned the lone singles win for the Johnnies.
After a pair of wins last week, Dabas leads the Red Storm with a 9-1 singles record. Sergio Molina's 8-1 is the second-best for the Red Storm. Carl Gustafsson is 6-3 on the season and has played the most matches on the team in the top slot, holding a 3-2 record in those matches.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings. The duo of Groves and Ryota Kaneda have played the most matches together and their five wins are the most on the team. Gustafsson and Anton Stendal tout a 4-1 record all at the No. 2 slot. Earlier in the season Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna were ranked No. 54 by the ITA. However, the doubles pair has not played together since the Cornell match on January 29.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated a 74-19 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Ole Miss enters the match 7-2 after a trio of wins last weekend against Alabama State and No. 68 SMU. Nikola Slavic enters the match 5-2 and was ranked No. 68 in the latest ITA singles rankings last week. Simon Junk and J. Hallquist leads the Rebels in wins at 6-1. Slavic teams up with Lukas Engelhardt to lead the teams in doubles wins at 6-2.
The Red Storm's meeting with the Rebels will be the Johnnies first match against an SEC school since 2014 when the squad took on Florida in the NCAA Tournament. This will be the first meeting between the two programs in school history.
St. John's will enjoy a week break before hosting Siena next Friday at USTA Tennis Center. The following day the Red Storm will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Drexel.
