St. John’s Captures Metropolitan Indoor Championships Title

Red Storm led the field with 155 points
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- After capturing 13 top-three finishes across 10 events, the St. John's track and field team secured the 2023 Metropolitan Indoor Championships title on Friday afternoon at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
The Red Storm logged 155 points as a team to beat out Columbia who scored 141 points.
Brooklyn Chestnut got the Johnnies off to a strong start by winning the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52, matching her personal best mark in the event. Delicia Bent finished fifth with a mark of 7.77 while Tea Siehou grabbed seventh with a time of 7.79.
Tatyana McKenzie kept the momentum going with a commanding win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.00 which ranks as the best mark in the BIG EAST this season.
St. John's put together a strong performance in the 400 meters as Nora Haugen and Chinenye Onuorah captured second and third place, respectively. Haugen logged a time of 56.48 while Onuorah posted a mark of 57.43.
Nia Holden finished second in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:15.86, and Quitterie Dujardin secured fourth, crossing the line at 1:17.23.
The Red Storm dominated the 4x400-meter relay as the quartet of Dujardin, Holden, McKenzie and Onuorah won comfortably with a time of 3:51.43.
Claire Cushing placed in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:56.62 while Hannah Huleatt grabbed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a mark of 18:46.61.
Assistant Coach Bob Sorenson's pole vault team had a strong showing on Friday as Berit Friedenbach, Meghan Ladd and Colette Metcalf secured second, fourth and fifth-place results, respectively. Friedenbach cleared the 3.36-meter bar while Ladd and Metcalf each surmounted the 3.21-meter bar.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji finished second in the long jump with a leap of 5.44 meters.
Coach Lexia Robinson's throws squad put together a solid effort at Ocean Breeze. Samantha Morillo-Martinez logged a new season best in the shot put with a toss of 13.75 meters to win the event. Jamora Alves tallied a second-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 13.45 meters. Ismini Andreou secured a new personal best in the weight throw after recording a distance of 16.58 meters.
The Red Storm will return to action next Friday when it travels to Boston to battle in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.
