Bluejays shoot 54.2 percent from 3-point range to even the season series
OMAHA, Neb.– The St. John's women's basketball team fell to Creighton, 81-65, on Saturday afternoon.
Creighton (16-6, 10-4 BIG EAST) shot well from 3-point range to even the season series on its home court at D.J. Sokol Arena. The Bluejays went a stellar 13-for-24 (54.2 percent) from beyond-the-arc.
St. John's (17-5, 8-5 BIG EAST) shot 47.1 (24-for-51) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from 3-point land in Omaha.
Creighton was led by Morgan Maly, who had a game-high 22 points going 9-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-7 from 3-point land.
Kadaja Bailey recorded a team-high 15 points and 6-of-10 shooting, the 20th time in 22 games she has reached double-figures in scoring this year.
Jayla Everett (11 points) and Rayven Peeples (10 points) were the other two Red Storm players to score in double-figures in Omaha. Peeples tied for a team-high with five rebounds and Everett went 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.
In the opening frame, Jillian Archer spurred an 8-0 run by herself to tie the game, 12-12. The forward drilled a 3-pointer during the stretch off a dish from Everett. A minute later, the graduate student put one in through contact and cashed in from the charity stripe. The final points of the first came off a triple from Everett, making it 20-17 with Creighton ahead after 10 minutes. Archer finished the opening quarter with eight points and four boards.
The Bluejays offense was firing on all cylinders to start the second quarter, as they charged out on a 12-2 run that brought the advantage to 13, 32-19. The Johnnies responded with a 3-pointer from Mimi Reid that brought the run to a halt, the point guard banked it in from the corner in impressive fashion. The sharpshooting Creighton side just kept hitting shots and spurred another quick scoring run and went to the locker room in control, 44-30.
To start the second half, the Bluejays expanded their lead to as much as 18, before a made triple from Jailah Donald, the freshman's first since the season opener on Nov. 7, allowed the Red Storm to slowly chip away. A Rayven Peeples and-one brought the deficit to 11, 60-49, but Creighton continued to keep the Johnnies at a distance and a Lauren Jensen triple gave the home squad a 14-point lead at the end of the third.
In the final 10 minutes, the Bluejays knocked down three consecutive 3-point attempts to stretch their lead to as many as 20. Danielle Patterson and the Red Storm fought till the end, as the forward scored all seven of her points in the last quarter.
St. John's will be back in action in the Midwest on Wednesday night, when it takes on Xavier at Cintas Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
