Head Coach Joe Tartamella reached 200 career wins at Xavier on Wednesday night
CINCINNATI— The St. John's women's basketball team dominated in the second half to cruise past Xavier, 73-52, on Wednesday night in Cincinnati.
A dominant 22-4 run in the third quarter blew the game open and sent the Red Storm surging to a road win at the Cintas Center.
With tonight's win Head Coach Joe Tartamella recorded his 200th career victory. In his 11th year at the helm, he joins DePaul's Doug Bruno, Creighton's Jim Flannery and UConn's Geno Auriemma as the fourth active BIG EAST coach to reach 200 career wins at their current school. Tartamella is no stranger to achieving accolades against the Musketeers. Last year, he became the winningest coach in program history, after earning his 177th win at Carnesecca Arena on Feb. 2, 2022.
The Johnnies were fueled by a balanced scoring attack, as four players finished in double-figures in scoring. The squad shared the ball well in Cincinnati, with five players tallying three assists or more.
Kadaja Bailey filled it up scoring 15 points to lead all scorers. The redshirt senior added 11 in the latter 20 minutes and dished out a team-high six assists.
Danielle Patterson registered an efficient evening, going for 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting performance.
Jayla Everett added a boost in the scoring department, closing out the game with 14 points and a game-high three made 3-pointers.
Rayven Peeples (10 points and seven rebounds) and Jillian Archer (nine points and nine rebounds) nearly finished with near double-doubles on an efficient evening in the post at the Cintas Center.
St. John's (18-5, 9-5 BIG EAST) got off to a slow start, as Xavier jumped out a 9-2 lead and the Red Storm started to pick up the pace offensively at the end of the first, highlighted by a mid-range swish from Patterson. Musketeers led by two, 14-12 after one.
In the second quarter, the Red Storm jumped in front and began to construct a lead. Everett buried her first of two triples in the quarter from the top of the key on a back pass from Peeples to make it, 18-14. In the closing moments of the first half, Unique Drake finished a crafty lay-in as the first half clock expired to take a 33-24 advantage into the break.
Bailey started off the second half with a three-pointer that was swung all the way around the horn and that play jumpstarted a 22-4 Red Storm run. The redshirt senior led the charge during the third frame, totaling nine points and four assists in eight minutes of action. As a team, St. John's shot 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the field and went perfect from the charity stripe in the third stanza.
In the final quarter, the Red Storm continued to roll a quick 6-0 run comprised of a pair of Patterson lay-up's and a wide-open fastbreak finish for Everett gave the road squad its largest lead of the game, 69-39. The Musketeers spurred a 12-4 run over the final five minutes of the game.
Next up for St. John's is a pair of home games, starting off with DePaul on Saturday. Tip-off against the Blue Demons is scheduled for 4 p.m.
